Organized Chaos: 5 Informative Tips to Help Clear the Clutter

December 23, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Around this time of year, families become very aware of all the clutter in their homes. Making space for decorating and entertaining shine light on clutter that needs to go. Take the time to follow these steps to keep your home clean.

Forgotten Items

Forgotten items from guests, purchases you meant to return, and other things easily contribute to disorganization. Return everything to its owner so you only have to deal with your property. If you don’t want to hunt everyone down, put it all in a large tote for the car. You’ll appreciate the space left in your home and be more motivated to return it right away.

Commit Yourself

Take an afternoon off and devote three hours to removing junk and organizing the aftermath. Call someone to hold you accountable to the task, someone who won’t allow you to reminisce and agonize over each memory attached to every item. Resolve not to leave the room until it is finished and orderly.  Having an emotional attachment to various items is something we all deal with.  Just make sure to have someone assist you to help break these bonds.

Self-Storage

Seasonal clothes, holiday decorations, keepsakes, hand-me-downs for future babies, and sports equipment in the off-season can all be taken out of your home. A secure self-storage unit, like those available at http://irongatestorage.com/cascadepark.html, keeps your rarely-used items safe and out of the way until they’re needed. Furniture that doesn’t fit can be taken away, saved for your next home, and kept safe from daily wear and tear.

Organization

Make sure to choose storage that fits your biggest needs. For example, vacuum-condensing bags are useful for storing clothes and quilts.  Something sturdier will be needed for holiday china and baseball equipment in the off-season. Make your in-house storage solution work even better by selecting an off-site storage unit for items too big to keep at home.

The Great Purge

Create an organizational system and storage unit that’s holding everything that doesn’t belong to you, finish up by purging the last of the clutter. Tempting as it may be to put off moving the newly-gathered piles and boxes of clutter out of your house, creating space to breathe easy and enjoy your home is imperative.

Your home is meant to be a safe haven where you can relax and enjoy yourself. Get rid of the clutter and you’ll be amazed you ever lived with it!
