Artistic Family: 4 Activities to Introduce Your Children to Art

December 19, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Introducing children to art helps them become more creative and versatile. It also awakens parts of their brains that can help them later in life, such as in school and in their careers. Most kids enjoy art, especially if it’s presented to them as something fun and interesting rather than an obligation. The following are some of the best ways to awaken the innate creativity of children.

Let Them Follow Their Interests

Almost all kids will display an interest in some kind of artistic projects. It’s best to encourage them in whatever direction they prefer. For example, a child may enjoy drawing or painting random shapes or colors on a canvas. Some art teachers will try to make them draw something concrete and realistic. If you let them explore their own creativity, however, it’s more likely that they’ll want to continue in their artistic pursuits.

Encourage Them to Explore Museums

Museums can be a valuable resource for introducing kids to art. At the same time, you don’t want to overdo it. Kids have short attention spans. Younger children will probably get more enjoyment out of interactive exhibits than ones where they are simply looking at pictures and objects. Even a brief visit to a museum familiarizes kids with works of art, which can be the start of a lifelong interest.

Show Kids that Art Is Practical

While works of art can be appreciated for their own sake, art can also play a part in everyday life. When kids learn this, they can learn to see art all around them. For example, wearable art in the form of clothing and accessories can be useful as well as attractive. Rather than just buying clothes for your kids, you might help them choose their own t-shirt designs with the help of Absolute Screen Printing and similar companies. Ask your children what they like about certain colors and styles. This will help them to recognize artistic values in everyday life.

Introduce Them to Many Types of Art

There are many types of artistic expression. By introducing children to as many possibilities as you can, you give them a chance to find where their interests and talents lie. In addition to crayons and paints, you can introduce them to clay. You can show them how to make collages using glue and objects they find. Some kids enjoy building model cars, ships and other structures. You can help your child discover a wide range of artistic activities.

Letting children explore their creativity is important for their intellectual and emotional development. Even if your child doesn’t become an artist, he or she can gain valuable skills by learning more about art. It’s always best to watch children and see what types of artistic expression they prefer and let them explore these areas.
