Six Little-Known Traffic Laws to Watch Out For

November 7, 2015 by Pam Maynard

While we have all heard of the strange and amusing laws that are still, somehow, on the books, there are also traffic laws not everyone is aware of. From not driving through Alaska with your dog strapped to the roof of your car, to giving pedestrians the right of way when driving on the sidewalk in Oregon, drivers need to be aware of the less known laws in whatever state they may be driving in.

Six Little-Known Traffic Laws to Watch Out For
Driving In:

Rhode Island
It is common to pass cars on the road, especially when they are traveling much slower than you. Be careful, though, when you’re passing other cars in Rhode Island. You are required by law to give the other vehicle an “audible signal” when passing them on either side.

Missouri
When driving through University City, Missouri, be sure to keep your hands off of your buddy’s steering wheel. You are allowed to honk your car horn when driving your own vehicle, but don’t try honking the horn of someone else’s vehicle, as you will be breaking the law.

Kansas
Cars are naturally noisy. However, when in Derby, Kansas, drivers should try to keep the noise level to a minimum. Something as simple as squealing your tires is considered a misdemeanor, and could cause you to spend up to 30 days in jail.

South Carolina
It seems like most people’s cars are in a general state of disarray on a regular basis. In South Carolina, it is against the law to have trash in your vehicle. While this may seem preposterous, it could get you arrested.

Maryland
If you own a yellow car in Maryland, you must have a permit and/or get written permission. Perhaps this to prevent a mix up with the yellow taxi cars, or maybe someone just had a disdain for yellow vehicles.

Illinois
Everyone has been aggravated at some point by getting stuck behind slow traffic. However, if you are holding up traffic by driving slow in the left passing lane in Illinois, you can get slapped with a fine of $1,000 dollars.

If you find yourself stuck with a ticket for breaking a law you weren’t aware of, pursue the advice of a law office, such as The Pearce Law Firm, P.C. They will be able to better aid you in the process of getting an unnecessary traffic ticket dismissed.
