Hot Dogs is something that I used to love very dearly as a kid. Hot dogs and baked beans, or hot dogs with macaroni and cheese? Yes! They were my favorite. And nothing beat a late night ripper with cheese and mustard – oh my! I really do love my hot dogs, but for the past four years my family has really tried to limit the amount of meat and animal product we consume. We thought we were doing this great thing by switching our traditional hot dogs for veggie dogs but the latest study from Clear Food suggests that I should have stuck with my Ballpark!
Clear Food is the world’s first consumer guide to food based on DNA analysis — they are a name we are going to see used a lot more in the future! They tested 345 hot dog and sausage samples from 75 brands, and available at 10 Retailers. What did they discover?
Human DNA found in 2% of samples
2/3 of the human DNA samples were vegetarian products.
Yes, you read this right! They found HUMAN DNA! Are you feeling sick yet?
Don’t worry, at least your vegetarian hot dog doesn’t have meat in it, right? I mean, it could have meat? Oh wait! The Clear Food report found meat too!
10% of Vegetarian products contained meat.
[Clear Food] found pork substitution in 3% of the samples. In most cases pork was substituted for chicken or turkey. [They] found that this issue occured in products of all price ranges.
14.4% of the hot dogs and sausages we tested were problematic, BUT there is still hope for us Hot Dog lovers out there! There are still several brands/varieties that are on the “clear” list. These samples received a score of 95+ and have been categorized as “safe” based upon the DNA testing results. “The Clear List is a comprehensive list of high-quality, safe, and accurate products. This list only includes products with a Clear Score of 95 or above. A score of 95 or above means that there were no hygienic issues, and no substitutions found in our molecular tests.”
