Urban Dangers: 6 Keys to Keeping Your Children Protected

September 6, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Big cities present some special challenges when it comes to raising children. Although you won’t deal with any tractor accidents or bear attacks in the city, urban areas have their own set of dangers.

Below you’ll find six ways to keep kids safe despite several urban-specific challenges. Exercise caution and be vigilant to keep your children safe.

6 Keys to Keeping Your Children Protected

1. Indoor Play

With a more dense concentration of automobiles, factories, and buildings, city air falls short on air quality standards.

Children are particularly vulnerable to asthma and other types of respiratory distress caused by air pollution. Before the day begins, check your local air quality rating. If the rating suggests an unhealthy amount of air pollution, opt for indoor play that day.

2. Defensive Walking

Urban areas have far more traffic per capita, so consider how you travel. Because many parents and children travel on foot through urban areas, learn about safe city walking.

Here are some basic tips:

  • Always look both ways before crossing a street
  • Never assume that drivers will yield to pedestrians
  • Seek driver eye contact to ensure that they see you
  • Be wary of crossing roads where people tend to speed
  • Check for moving vehicles even when the signal says to go

Teach your children these principles, and emphasize using them with or without you there. If you or your child is ever hit by a driver, check with a local attorney to learn your legal options for recourse.

3. Time and Area Curfews

Crime seems to have much higher percentages in urban areas, including occurrences of violent crimes and sex offenders. Of course, it all depends on where you are at any given time of the day.

Help children stay smart about avoiding crime. Give and stick to strict curfews. Limit the time they spend in shadier parts of town, especially after dark. Make sure to explain that you’ve made these rules to ensure their safety.

4. Stranger Danger

It’s always better to play it safe than feeling sorry that you weren’t more careful. Teach your children about stranger danger and what to do if they come in contact with a persistent stranger.

5. Continual Monitoring

Metropolitan areas provide the perfect opportunities for children to get lost or go missing. Keep your children safe with rules against wandering off. Hold their hand when attending crowded events, and watch them in open areas.

6. Regular Conversation

The best way to keep your child safe is to keep communication channels open and clear. You can’t teach kids without good communication, and they won’t listen unless they know you listen to them, too. Talk with your child regularly to assess any existing problems and to help them avoid any future dangers.

Living in an urban area comes with its own particular difficulties, especially for families with young children. Be proactive in keeping your children safe from urban dangers.
