In June I attended the baby shower for a new bloggy friend Kristy, from Meet Kristy and Adventures of a Couponista. The theme of her shower was Disney and since I always provide one cloth diaper to expecting mothers I decided I should do something special with a bumGenius Newborn diaper!
I painted Mickey Mouse on the backside of a Newborn Cloth Diaper!
Before Painting Your Cloth Diaper:
Before I started my project I asked several cloth painting experts how I should do it They said I should prep the diaper first and THEN do the painting with Tulip fabric paint.
I was so nervous I practiced on paper before I started. I tried several techniques and brush strokes before I finally agreed on a style I liked.
Then, I used my backup stash of cloth diaper covers to practice on more. My own children have five Mickey Mouse diaper covers to use now. The diaper cover below is a Thirsties Duo Wrap that has been used for the past five straight years! Three kids later, it has a new look! (My husband said this design looks more like Simba’s outline instead of Mickey…)
Tips & Directions for Painting Your Cloth Diaper Cover or AIO:
- Always practice on paper AND again on cloth before beginning.
- Double check your bum placement before you paint!
- Use a sewing hoop to keep the diaper straight and the fabric tight.
- Go slow.
- Allow the paint to dry completely before attempting to make corrections (you may make mistakes worse otherwise)
- Place diaper inside a laundry bag or old pillowcase and run diaper in the dryer for 30 minutes.
- Wash and dry diaper one time.
(Diaper cover in the photo above is an old flip diaper cover – not the diaper that was gifted)
The diaper gifted and all diaper covers in this post were either purchased at or provided by DivaDiapers.com. After being a customer for three years, I was added to the team as the blog and social media manager. Diva Diapers is a WAHM business based in Palm Coast, Florida.

Why do I give Cloth Diapers as Baby Shower Gifts?
I have two reasons why I give cloth diapers to expectant mothers as baby shower gifts. The first is because, when my oldest son (who is fifteen now) was born my in-laws gifted me a package of cloth diaper prefolds to use for whatever I needed. Like many new parents who receive that first pack of Gerber prefolds — they became great for catching baby spit-up instead. BUT….my husband and I had one vehicle and I found myself home alone with my new baby often. Our schedules were hectic and there were several times I ran out of diapers before my husband got home from work. After the second time, I decided that I would start to use those diapers the proper way – I started cloth diapering when we were home and using disposable diapers when we left.
The second reason, I never thought I’d be a fulltime cloth diaper mom, but I have been for five straight years and I would love to convert everyone! The best way to do that is for moms to see them for themselves. Cloth diapers of today are adorable and new moms love that first diaper so much they almost always try them (at least once). Even if they only try them that one or two times when they run out of sposies unexpectedly, I’m happy.
Congratulations to Kristy
on the birth of her baby girl!
So overjoyed to announce that we welcomed Sarai into our family last night after being 9 days past our due date! She is absolutely perfect in every way and more than worth the wait!
