7 Ways to Get a Healthy Child in the Womb

July 31, 2015 by Pam Maynard

 Kick Start Their Health Early

If you want to have a healthy child, then the time to start making that happen is earlier, not later. This means that what you do to help your baby in the womb will have a profound effect on your child’s health for years to come. At this critical time in a baby’s development, you should expect that various aspects of nutrition will play a key role in ensuring that your baby is both healthy and free of disabling defects. The following are seven tips to help you get your child’s health off to a good start while they are still in the womb.

Kickstart Their Health Early, 7 Ways to Get a Healthy Child in the Womb

Avoid Alcohol While Pregnant

It may seem like such an obvious bit of old advice, but mothers regret the fact that they took to drinking alcohol while pregnant. Not only does this cause fetal alcohol syndrome, but it produces other health complications as well for your baby that simply do not justify indulging in alcohol during pregnancy.

Avoid Drug Use

Another key to ensuring that you will give birth to a healthy baby is to avoid the use of illegal drugs. A baby born with a drug addiction from the womb is going to likely have many health problems at birth and throughout their life. If you are a pregnant woman who is dealing with a drug addiction, it is vitally important to seek professional help in managing your addiction. Every minute you waste will create a more-unhealthy outcome for your baby.

Take a Quality Probiotic While Pregnant

A child obtains its immune function from its mother. If a mother has a healthy probiotic balance, this helps a child to be born with a strong immune function. A quality probiotic will maintain multiple strains of live cultures for promoting optimal health. Remember, the reason you need to use many different strains of probiotics is because each different strain of beneficial bacteria performs a different health-promoting function. Many different beneficial strains will provide your baby with a variety of immune-boosting factors that will enable your baby to handle early childhood illness and infections more easily.

Taking Folic Acid Before and During Pregnancy

According to WebMD.com, taking folic acid before and during pregnancy may help in preventing neural tube defects, such as Down Syndrome. This is good news, because Down Syndrome is a relatively common condition.

Taking Choline During Pregnancy

When it comes to nutrients that matter during pregnancy, choline is an important nutrient to consider. Choline helps your baby’s development by preventing spinal cord issues and neural tube defects. Eggs are a great dietary source of choline.

Taking Vitamin D3 During Pregnancy

Another key vitamin that women need to take during pregnancy is vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is important to the development of a baby’s bones and teeth. Vitamin D3 deficiency will often cause growth retardation and structural defects in a baby. One reason is because D3 is essential to handling how the human body utilizes calcium and phosphorus.

Consult With a High-risk Obstetrician if you Have a High-Risk Pregnancy

The role of a maternal-fetal specialist (high-risk obstetrician), such as Dr. Gilbert Webb in St. Louis is to develop a professional, medical understanding of women’s reproductive and pregnancy-related issues. This type of medical practitioner specializes in high-risk pregnancies and will be able to help diagnose and address any potential risk factors and health complications your baby may be facing throughout your pregnancy.

If you strive to get adequate nutrition to support the development of a healthy baby, then your pregnancy will likely turn out to be more favorable than most. When it comes to a child’s development in the womb, nutrition and proper monitoring will help to ensure a positive, healthy outcome. By making healthy choices for your baby now, while it is still in the womb, you will be able to make this a reality.
