While moving can be an exciting time, it’s important to not stress your family out during your move. A certain amount of stress is expected during a move, but you can keep the stress to a minimal level. Consider these tips for your next move.
Protect Your Items
During a move, things tend to get broken. No one means to break things, but in the shuffle of a move, things fall, heavier furniture can crush electronics or water can get on them. This is why it’s best to protect electronic items and other valuables with customized laptop and computer cases. Equipment cases can be used to ensure your electronics are protected during your move.
Packing Items
Most everyone chooses standard rectangular boxes for all of their items. While this will suffice for things like clothing, other items can actually get damaged. Get boxes that will fit dimensionally. Boxes come in various shapes, such as cylindrical, barrel-shaped and flat boxes to accommodate irregular-shaped items. It will help keep items protected, but it also serves to save space.
Organize the New Place Before Arriving
Putting items away in the new home will go a lot quicker if they’re arranged ahead of time. This means that before items can be packed up, it’s wise to organize every house in the old home. When things are put into boxes, properly label each box with what’s inside. You could also label boxes according to rooms, making it easy to unpack when arriving at your new home.
Plan Ahead
The new home may be in a different layout. For instance, the baby’s room may be the last room in the home. This means that the baby’s room’s contents should be closer to the moving truck’s door to unload first. Figure out what to put into the truck in this manner. Unloading the truck makes it far easier so that no one is tripping on items that would fill up the living room and other rooms that have to be walked through before getting to the baby’s room.
Utilities
Arrange to have the utilities turned on either before moving in or within the first few days of setting up the new home. Make sure to have disposable plates, disposable utensils, a cooler for food and other things that will make the first days livable if the utilities absolutely cannot be turned on. However, water is a must. It’s needed for showering, the bathroom and general cleaning.
Think Smart
Use clothing, towels and linens where possible for padding. Dish towels can be used to pad plates. Clothing and sheets can be used to pad figurines from the bedroom.
Declutter
Efficiency is key when planning a move. Have a plan in place to know what to expect. It sometimes helps to think backwards in terms of what should happen first, second, third, etc. Think about what needs to be unpacked first, then think about how it should be arranged in the truck and so on. Keeping a plan let’s everyone know what’s coming up, and it cuts down drastically on the amount of stress experienced.
Moving to a new home will make everyone in the home a little more stressed, excited, nervous or happy, and planning ahead of time can help everyone stay calm and focused. These tips can help reduce the stress of moving.
