Your First Steps After Your Child Suffers a Life-Changing Accident

July 26, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Serious accidents can have life-changing consequences for those involved in the accident as well as their family members. When your child is impacted by the accident, you may be overwhelmed with stress and grief, and you may be concerned about how the accident will impact your child and the rest of your family. While this can be an emotional time for your entire family, it is important to follow a few key steps to help your affected child and the whole family more easily navigate through the current situation and move forward.

Your First Steps After Your Child Suffers a Life-Changing Accident (1)

Seek Legal Advice
With some accidents, nobody is at fault. However, if your child has been impacted by the negligent or intentional actions of another person, a company or another entity, you may benefit from speaking with a personal injury lawyer like someone from Pritzker Law. A life-changing accident may require your child to have on-going medical care, numerous surgeries, special educational assistance and more, and these can all cost a fortune. If another person or entity caused the accident, a personal injury attorney may represent you in a lawsuit that could result in compensation for these expenses.

Make Changes To Your Home

A life-changing event may result in some changes or modifications needing to be made inside the home to accommodate your child. Some children who have been in an accident may have special health issues that require medical equipment to be placed in the home. If the child is in a wheel chair, ramps, rails and other features may need to be installed in the home. These are just a few of the examples of modifications that may need to be made to your home.

Consider Alternative Employment Options

If both parents previously worked outside of the home, it may be beneficial for at least one parent to consider transitioning to a work-from-home position or to a part-time position. When a child needs on-going care in the home, regular medical treatments or other special care, having one parent on hand to provide the care or to tend to the child’s needs can be beneficial. An alternative to this may be to hire in-home care for the child.

It may take many weeks or months for a family to fully adjust to life after a child has been seriously injured by an accident. However, when you follow these initial steps, you can more easily make this transition and move forward with your life.
