5 Common Myths about Children Nutrition and Diet

July 25, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Every parent wonders whether or not their children meet their needs for nutrition. They see their children grow healthily but are not sure what exactly should be included in the diet for the kids. It is therefore very important to know your kid’s nutritional needs during their different stages of life and how to meet these needs. It does not require you to be a nutritionist but you should learn the basics that will help you settle your questions that keep you worried.

Kids eating a healthy meal in the kitchen

Kids need to eat veggies to meet their needs for nutrition.

Children can meet their minerals and vitamin needs by taking fruits alone. Vegetables are not a must for the children’s nutrition and therefore as a parent, there is no need for worrying about your kids not eating veggies.

Most children require a multivitamin.

One third of small kids take multivitamins, according to a study. However, researchers say that these multivitamins meet most of the nutritional needs apart from some few key nutrients not found in multivitamins.

Nutrition is not a great concern if the kids are taking whole foods that are natural.

The belief that kids who take only natural foods and whole foods do not need to make use of supplementation is misguided. Researchers have revealed that even by natural means, some nutrients are hard to meet. Breads, buns and hamburgers made from whole wheat grains are some of the sources of natural foods. Varieties and types of these whole grains and breads are available from places like Klosterman Baking Company. These should be combined together with supplementation in order to offer more nutrients to the kids’ diet.

Small portions of healthy foods are enough for the kids

Parents may want children to take a few bites of several foods apart from the ones they feel they want to eat. Children will mostly prefer bread, especially the white bread, hamburgers, hotdog buns, pitas and thins but the parent may force them make small bites on other foods. It is important to know that how much a child enjoys food affects how well the nutrients will be absorbed in the body according to a study. This is associated with the digestion of food and the increase of gastrointestinal activity if the kid finds the food appealing.

Kids should take low-fat diets

Kids need a lot of fats more than adults for growth. Fats are vital sources of calories for growth of the kids. It also plays an important role in their development.

From the above information, the unclear questions are now answered and you can now make informed decisions about the diet for your kids.
