3 Tips for Becoming a Great Author

July 22, 2015 by Pam Maynard

If you are an avid reader, you might have given some thought to becoming a professional writer. However, making a living as a writer is a lot more difficult than it seems. It is a very competitive industry, with many writers trying to get their work published. Therefore, if you want to get a publishing company to take notice of your work, it needs to be a cut above the competition. There are numerous things which go into becoming an author like Daniel Handler. Here is what you need to be a great author.

writing once upon a time

1. A great idea

The first thing you will need to concern yourself with is coming up with a great idea to write about. You need to make sure that your story idea is something that is marketable to the masses. Ideally, you want your subject matter to be as mainstream as possible. Therefore, you must give your idea some careful consideration. If you are writing about a subject that is very obscure, you may still succeed in getting it published. However, you will not be able to sell a large amount of copies because there will not be many people interested in your writings. This will severely limit how much money you will be able to earn during your career.

2. A literary agent

Authors like Daniel all have literary agents to represent them. Most of the time, it is necessary for a person to have a literary agent before they can get signed by a publishing company. Generally, publishing companies will not accept submissions from people who do not already have a literary agent. Therefore, if you are trying to break into the writing profession, you should send some of your manuscripts to various literary agents to see if they like your style of writing. In many cases, an agent will send back your manuscript with some notes about revisions you should make. This type of constructive criticism is essential for any new author to improve their writing skills. Rewrite your manuscript according to the agent’s revisions and send it back. With any luck, you will get signed. Then the agent can begin submitting your work to various publishing houses.

3. Confidence

You must have confidence in your writing ability. You will face some rejection in the early part of your career. All authors go through this, so do not give up. Keep writing and continue to improve.
