Family Road Trip: How to Have Fun with your Kids While Traveling on Vacation

June 20, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Family vacations are meant to be entertaining, but the road trip can be exhausting for young children. To prevent stress and boredom, it is important to keep kids engaged while on the road. Fortunately, it is possible to add tons of extra fun during an extended drive. Here are some tips for keeping your little tykes happy on a prolonged journey:

Make Surprise Stops

Long stretches of road can be daunting for minors, so it is wise for parents to break the trip into smaller intervals. An easy way to add joy to a road trip is by planning to hit secret destinations. Smart moms and dads find nearby attractions that are family friendly, and they riddle the vacation with these additional excursions. As an added bonus, this will grant more time for bathroom breaks, so unplanned stops can be minimized.

Bring Fun Music

A stimulating soundtrack can work wonders in keeping a kid calm during a road trip. Letting them pick their favorite tunes will help a lot. An invigorating experience can be gained by burning a personalized CD for the trip. This mix-tape will keep things rolling smoothly, and it can be kept for sentimental memories in the future.

Conduct Sightseeing

While road-tripping, the surroundings provide plenty of interesting stimuli. Parents should make a log of anticipated sites, and the kids can keep track of the attractions as they are spotted. This is a good way to keep their eyes peeled for other important landmarks too!

Play Car Games

There are endless games that can be played to pass the time. The best ones usually involve acting and role-playing, especially since they keep everyone in the car awake. An easy way to accomplish this is by reciting Disney Quotes or movie lines. Other games are sold at tourist stops along the way. They are usually only for the passengers, but some find clever ways to safely include the driver!

Incorporate Electronic Devices

In the past, there were far fewer distractions available inside the vehicle. Today, you have a lot more tools at your disposal. Tons of media can be packed on your computer, smartphone or tablet. Therefore, parents should cram their devices full of shows, movie and games.

Final Note

While driving, a disgruntled child can cause serious problems. This is why it’s so important to keep kids occupied during a road trip! Ultimately, a parent’s primary focus should be on the street itself. As a result, the aforementioned strategies are immensely useful for maintaining a safe ride!
