Have you ever tried to find a reading app for kids in the app store without researching first? It can be a nightmare! I don’t know how many reading apps I have downloaded over the years that took longer to download than it lasted on my device. Not this time!!! Planet Read! HD is an app that appeals to both of my early readers. I have even found my preschooler “playing” it during his free tablet time.
When I learned about Planet Read! HD this weekend I was really hopeful my preschooler would like it. He loves planets and has several space and planet science apps on our iPad already. Since we haven’t formally started elementary school with him I haven’t started reading with him yet. After I downloaded Planet Read! HD and started exploring it for myself I wondered what he would think of it and if it would it spark an interest in reading for him. I was really happy to learn that it did interest him – he enjoys playing Planet Read! HD a lot!
For the past two days my Little Guy has been playing Planet Read! HD on his own. He can even tell me how to spell CAT already! For a child who has barely begun to understand the difference between letters and numbers- I’m amazed.
What I like the most about this is how much he likes it – ON HIS OWN!!! Amazing!
As you can see from the photo above, each of the planets and moons are named after the sound the lesson is focusing on. Moon “a” is from the Short Vowel Planet System. Moon “a” teaches children all about the short “a”. This is why my little guy has learned “cat” in less than two days (smile).

Planet Read is committed to every student’s reading success.
Even children who are already readers will find Planet Read! HD helpful. My ten year-old is still considered an “early” reader. She is just starting chapter books and is still very green. She found the level 3 practice to be challenging but really liked that the app helped her anytime she questioned herself.
Planet Read! HD is one of the few reading apps that has lasted more than ten minutes on our iPad. It is a wonderful FREE app available in the apple store. My early readers love it and I believe Planet Read! HD will be the perfect app for families to use during their summer reading.
