Spring Cleaning Shortcuts: 3 Places to Address Before Summer

April 23, 2015 by Pam Maynard

So winter’s bite is gone, and it’s now time for spring. Whether you are a strong believer in spring cleaning or not, most likely, there are some areas that just weren’t practical to clean during the winter, and now is the time to get rid of these cobwebs, dust and let the sunshine in. Below are just a few examples of what you can do to make the most of your spring cleaning extravaganza this month!

Indoors

Rugs – If you have put extra rugs down to help keep it warm and cozy during the winter, then now is the time to get them up, cleaned and packed away until next year. This is also a good time to clean permanent carpeting as it probably hasn’t been cleaned all winter. This doesn’t just mean give it a good vacuuming, but more like a steam clean or have professional carpet cleaners come in and get it freshened up.

Windows – Understandably, it’s almost impossible to clean windows in the winter. So they will need a good cleaning along with the frames and windowsills.

Carpet – Winter months have a tendency to have us throw caution to the wind and just allow all sorts of dust and grim into our home. Make sure you pay special attention to entryways and exits as they are more high-traffic areas around the home.

Items and Tools

Storing Winter Clothes, Toys and Equipment – There is guaranteed to be plenty of items in the clothing category, probably some toys like ice skates and sleds and some tools like shovels, ice scrapers and heavy winter curtains.

Ceiling Fans and Fireplace – The ceiling fans haven’t been used in months, so they will need to be cleaned well before they are turned on again. The fireplace won’t be needed again for a while, so now is a good time to get it cleaned out, clean the glass door, if there is one, and clean the area around it as well as the chimney. The walls near to it may also need to be cleaned. If the walls are brick, then you will need to scrub them and if not, then you may want to paint them and brighten up this area for summer.

The Central Heating and Cooling Unit – With winter over the heat will soon be upon you. Make sure your AC unit is up to date, cleaned, and ready to go for the summer heat. With help from Arc Electric & Air Conditioning & Heating Inc, you can be sure that everything will be in working order.

Outdoors

Porch, Yard and Patio – These areas will need to be cleaned, touched up and possibly scrubbed. As soon as you are able to turn your water back on then cleaning this area can be extremely easy. Try applying a water resistant stain to help keep it looking good for years to come.

Grill – No doubt, you will want to pull this out again and start putting it to full use. However, protect everyone by giving all of the components a thorough cleaning before grilling your first summer meal. Nobody wants their hamburgers to taste like old rusted grill.

This doesn’t go over everything in detail, however, what it does do is give you an idea of where to start. To ensure you don’t miss anything, go through each room in the house and think about what you will no longer use and what you will start using again, and this should give you a pretty good idea about what needs to be cleaned and freshened up.
