My oldest son is a typical teen boy who refuses to bathe daily. I tried to explain “smell” to him and he didn’t seem to care. Short of micromanaging every detail of his hygiene habit, we decided to go another route. Education, action, incentives …
1) My husband and I thought it was time to explain how smelly feet and sweaty areas can be more than just smelly. We taught him the value of washing by showing him negative results of not washing frequently. Yup, I showed him those worse-case scenario rash and infections photos from my search engine. He was horrified (and so was I).
2) The next step we took was having him wash his own clothing and sneakers. This allowed him the opportunity to smell his own funk so he knows why we felt an intervention was necessary. The fact that his sneakers needed to be washed multiple times was very eye opening for him.
3) Micromanagement… “If you don’t like my nagging, start doing it on your own so I don’t have to!” Yes, I resorted to nagging. Sometimes it is hard to get into a new routine and we all need a little nudge. I think of it more like “life coaching” instead of nagging.
4) Incentives. My son refuses to bathe with soaps that are formulated for girls or children. I can’t say that I blame the kid, waking around the house smelling like a rose petals doesn’t say “man” at all.
