Playing House: Seven of the Best Small Towns to Raise a Family

April 1, 2015 by Pam Maynard

You love your family and want the best for them, and that includes finding the best place to live. Are you looking for a place with plenty to do outdoors? Or are you looking for a place that will give your kids a taste of history? Where you decide to plant your roots and raise your family is important in any kids’ upbringing. Read ahead to see some of the best cities for small families.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston is home to great sports teams, amazing institutions of higher education, and historical neighborhoods. Boston is also home to the esteemed Boston Children’s Hospital. This Hospital has the largest research center located in a pediatric facility in the world. A large number of Boston’s grade schools participate in a fitness program before the kids start their school day as well, making your kids’ health a priority here.

Burlington, Vermont
Different outdoor activities are available to do all year round in this lovely city. Your family can take advantage of the different summer activities available at Lake Champlain, and of course, there is plenty of snow fun in the winter. The school district has a Farm 2 School program that provides farm fresh vegetables to school cafeterias. School children also get to visit farms and farmers visit the classrooms.

Family Projects

Portland, Maine
Portland is perfect for families looking for a laid-back lifestyle. There is a lot of outdoor space and the city has a relatively low crime rate. You are only a short three hour drive from Acadia National Park as well. Kids can take part in the Junior Ranger Program or participate in the many other outdoor children’s programs available.
Cheyenne, Wyoming
Cheyenne has a low crime rate and great schools. This is a great city for the outdoor family. The unemployment rate in Cheyenne is also low thanks to the F. E. Warren Air Force Base. The most important event in the city is the week long Cheyenne Frontier Days which includes a parade, carnival, and a rodeo.

Minneapolis, Minnesota
If you are looking for a city with clean air, healthy living, and safe streets, than look no further than Minneapolis. There are plenty of bike paths and parks and the city also has a low unemployment rate. According to Renter’s Guide, this city has a lot of different housing options as well. From Canadian-like Mt. Pleasant apartments for rent, to suburban town houses you can find a lot of different options for your type of family.

Madison, Wisconsin
With Madison, you get clean air, low unemployment rates, and low crime rates. There will be plenty for your family to do with all the parks and trails in the city. There is also the Madison Farmer’s Market which isn’t just a place to buy your vegetables, but also a place for city socializing that can keep you connected to your neighborhood.

Omaha, Nebraska
Omaha has plenty to do for small families. The Omaha Zoo has the largest indoor rain forest in the United States. Your kids will love attending the Omaha Summer Arts Festival where your kids will be able to work on crafts and dance. And don’t forget the Omaha Farmer’s Market.

Now you know the best places to live in the United States, it’s just a matter of choosing where to go. If you are thinking of relocating, consider renting a place in the location of your choice. This allows you the flexibility to try out a new city without the commitment of buying a place or being stuck in financial payments.
