Family Pack: Everything You Need for an American Northwest Road Trip

February 26, 2015 by Pam Maynard

The great American road trip beckons, but before heading out on your adventure, be sure to put some time and thought into preparing ahead and packing well. As you enjoy diverse scenery, you can stay comfortable and make the most of your trip. Read on for five top suggestions on preparing for your road trip.

Family Pack Everything You Need for an American Northwest Road Trip
Roof Rack
You may find that your list of what to pack gets lengthy. A Hitch City roof rack allows you to pack what you need, plus to allow for extra space to bring home souvenirs. Roof racks offer versatility and space. Most Toronto Thule models are weatherproof and offer the added security benefit of potential thieves not being able to view the contents of your vehicle. If you don’t want to commit to purchasing a roof rack, at least consider using a roof bag.
Cooler
You will be glad you brought this on the longest leg of the journey. Start the trip off with a packed lunch and cool drinks, and refill as you go. Consider freezing some bottles of water or lemonade to store in the cooler before you head out. They can act as ice packs until they thaw. Consider purchasing a new cooler especially for your road trip. A quality cooler will be able to keep food and drinks cool for up to two days, and there are even electric plug in car coolers to help with cooling. Do a trial run before you leave to be sure that the cooler fits efficiently into your space and that you can easily access it.
Toiletries
Although it may be unpleasant to imagine, sometimes there are large gaps between public restrooms. Pack an essential grouping that includes bags, wipes, and toilet paper. Also include basic first aid items such as band aids, and over the counter medicines for motion sickness and headaches. You will be glad that you did!
Your Camera
Do not forget your camera! The American Northwest is gorgeous, and there will be many opportunities to pull over and take photographs. Scenic stops include canyon overlooks, high desserts, mountain views, and beautiful seascapes. Bring a spare battery or your camera charger.
A Blanket
This just may be your most versatile item. It can be used to keep warm on cool nights, to lay down for an impromptu picnic, or even to have something familiar while in unfamiliar places.
Enjoy the anticipation of the open road. Trips like this are true memory makers! Feel free to set your own pace and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from being prepared.
