7 Unique Ways to Make Your Home Safe and Fun for Your Children

January 10, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Having kids can be a frightening experience. Parents begin to see injuries with each step and danger around every corner. In order to avoid enveloping the children with bubble wrap, take a few precautions to better prepare a home that is safe for the kids.

Cushion the Landing
When young children start to walk, parents begin the fear the many falls and tumbles that are sure to occur. Prepare the house by covering hardwood or tile floors with rugs or cushioning, but steer clear of too many blankets or pillows, as those can easily cause a child to trip.

Soften the Corners
Any sharp corner can be a dangerous weapon for a young child. Parents can purchase gel cushionings to slip over the corners of table tops, wooden furniture and the evil bottom stair. This way, children will be able to enjoy exploring the house without any worries.

Secure the Outdoors
Having a fenced in back yard is great for children. This way, they can run around to their heart’s content without parents having to worry about any running into the street or talking to strangers. In order to protect little fingers, purchase wire mesh safety netting from a company like Jakob Rope Systems, rather than a traditional metal fence.

Offer Exploration
It is no fun for the kids to live in a home where a gate is around every corner. Parents should definitely put gates in front of any staircase, but they do not need to bane the kids from every room. For example, put safety locks on the kitchen drawers and cabinets that contain sharp items, but keep a few open with plastic containers or wooden spoons that the kids can enjoy. Do the same in the rest of the rooms and let the kids explore.

Watch the Floor
Choking is a huge hazard with young children and parents should not have to worry about their kids swallowing strange objects everywhere they go. In order to protect against that, vacuum at least three times a week and keep a look out for larger objects. Also, scan the yard weekly to look for objects that could be harmful.

Parent Pick-Up
Parents should keep in mind that their possessions are a lot more harmful than their children’s. While still allowing exploration, there should be a couple rooms that young children are not allowed in where parents can keep their belongings.

The Buddy System
With young children, going out can often be a dangerous expedition. Parents should strive to let their kids feel like they can run around a playground without a leash, but also need to apply the buddy system. Always keep an eye on the child and practice habits such as holding hands, inventing a signaling system or using strollers.

The kids can be safe while still having fun, all it takes it a few extra steps from the parents.
