5 Tips to Help Care for Your Elderly Parents

January 8, 2015 by Pam Maynard

As your parents continue to grow older, their needs will continue to change. Things that use to be easy are no longer anything other than a struggle for the elderly. From simple walking to doing routine everyday tasks, seniors will continue to suffer from the effects of aging.

Tips for caring for your elderly parents

In-Home Nursing

Hiring someone with experience and qualifications to come into the home to live with a parent might be the solution. They can provide them with the care that they need. This includes giving them prescription medications, cooking meals, doing general housecleaning and other tasks in the home. Professional nursing services are available to provide care for aging parents as another alternative.

Hospice Care

For those with parents that have a terminal illness or are at the last stage of their lives, Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care can help them shoulder the burden. Hospice can provide you with around the clock nursing care for your loved one. They provide 24/7 care only if the parent is in a hospice facility. At home care is provided on a visitation basis. They come to the home to check the patient’s vitals and make sure that they are receiving about the same type care that a nursing home provides.

Nursing Homes

Many parents dread having to be placed in a nursing home facility. Sometimes this is the only solution available when they get to the point that the end is near. You should always do a considerable background check of the facilities available around your area. You don’t want to place your parent in a nursing home that has a reputation for neglecting their patients.

Many nursing homes are nice and provide their patients that live in them with the best of care. They provide seniors with daily activities to life their spirits including games and other activities specifically designed for the elderly. You should remember that many nursing homes are filled to capacity and this might limit the availability of a room for your loved one. Medicare only pays for a patient for so many days, so you must apply for Medicaid to ensure that the bills are paid for your parent.

Family Members and Friends

If your parent remains in decent health, you might rely on other family members to visit regularly. Swapping days or nights out with other family members might be a short-term answer in providing your parent the care that they require. Asking close friends to call the parent daily or stop by to visit them is another solution to helping your parent maintain their dignity of living in their home.

Sometimes this is a good solution when you are working on other means to ensure your parent has adequate medical care and companionship. There is a lot of paperwork and other problems that you will run into when you start dealing with care for an aging parent that needs other to rely on.

Dealing with Legalities

Most people seldom realize the stress and despair involved in dealing with all of the problems associated with aging parents. Things that you should be looking into before your parent gets to the point where they can no longer live independently are adequate insurance. This includes medical, accident and life insurance policies. You should make sure they are covered completely in an emergency.

A will should be made out by your parent through an attorney to ensure that property is taken care of legally. The options on what to include in a will and what type can be discussed with the lawyer when it is filed. Medicare has a five-year look back period law now that can give them the option of checking to see if the parent owned a home that was sold or other property that was given to children. They can go after you if any bills remain unpaid by medical facilities and nursing centers.

Now is the time to begin the journey with your parent in the sunset of their life. You are responsible for your aging parent in their final years. Don’t wait until they get to that part in their life. Discuss with them now on what their wishes are and learn what steps you need to be making to ensure that they are well taken care of. Check into what options that both of you will have available when the time comes for assisted living or other medical care. Both of you will have peace of mind knowing that careful planning eased the burden of this serious situation that affects everyone at some point in life.
