5 Inexpensive Ways to Keep Your House Warm this Winter

December 24, 2014 by Pam Maynard

Keeping your home warm can be expensive, especially the deeper we get into winter. If you are struggling to keep your home warm, try one of these tricks to save on your heating bill. They’re meant to be inexpensive and save you money. While some may require a little work and a few materials, you will be happy you tried them when your next heating bill comes along!

5 ways to keep hourse warm
HVAC Maintenance

This may sound expensive, but it’s actually an inexpensive way to save on heating costs. Paying a company like East Side Ventilation Ltd. to perform HVAC maintenance before the weather turns can help your heater work more efficiently. When your heater works more efficiently, you save money. Give it a try!

Heavy Curtains

Heavy curtains around your windows can keep your warm air in and the cold air out. A lot of heat escapes through the windows, so installing heavy curtains and keeping them closed at night can help keep your home warm.

Window Film

You can now buy special film to place on your windows to help insulate them. During the day, you want to open your curtains to let the sun in and heat your home naturally. The plastic covering will help let the sun in, but keep the cold air out. Look for it at your local home improvement store.

Weather Stripping

Make sure your doors and windows aren’t letting in cold air. Place weather stripping along the bottoms of doors and seams in your windows. It can help close gaps that are allowing air leaks.

Portable Heater

Purchasing a portable heater may be a better option than cranking the heater up. At night, you really only need bedrooms to stay warm. One thing you can do is turn the heat down at night and buy an inexpensive portable heater to just keep your room comfortable. That way, you’re only paying to heat the rooms you use.

If you are trying to stay warm this winter, use these techniques to create a comfortable home for you and your family. These tips can help keep your heating bills down all year long. While some of these tricks may cost a little at first, such as buying the portable heater, the money they save by keeping your home warm all year is worth the cost. Also, projects like weatherstripping and window film can help keep your home comfortable even in the summer. Use these tricks and stay warm this winter!
