Travel to Illinois River Road

October 23, 2014 by Pam Maynard

It’s fall in New England which means beautiful colors everywhere.  But, if you are visiting Illinois, have you ever thought about visiting Illinois River Road? It’s the perfect time to head out for a weekend drive down to the Illinois River Road.  The spectacular colors from fall foliage are on display throughout the nature points and winding roads within the river valley.  The entire experience is one that cannot be missed, even if you find yourself taking few detours off the beaten path.

Be sure to mark next year’s calendar so you can head back down to the Spoon River Scenic Drive Fall Festival that has been held during the first two weekends of October since 1968!

On your way home, you must stop through Princeton to visit the Captain Swift Covered Bridge.  It is the only two-lane covered bridge in Illinois. Located one mile West of Princeton in Bureau County, this bridge is a remarkable work of art and design derived from an idea patented by Theodore Burr in 1804.  (The GPS coordinates are: N41 22.745 W89 29.871)

If you can, plan to leave before November 2nd so you can stop into the Hundred Acres Orchard and Market!  This market only happens Friday-Sunday and is located at 14180 1800 East Street, Princeton, IL 61356. They feature a “kids play area, peach trees, wine store and expanded selection of gift and market items, as well as local honey right from the orchard.”
