When it’s time to get a new mattress, there are a handful of questions you need to ask yourself, before you even begin to think about asking a salesperson. Things like, what materials do I want, how much do I want to spend, and am I willing to order online to save on cost?
But once you decide to purchase a new mattress, the first question you need to answer isn’t cost or material, but what size is best for your lifestyle. This is based on a few factors, including available funds and space in your home, but even before those, you can cross a few sizes off your list just by identifying a few things about your life.
First, the easiest way to pare down your options is whether or not you share your bed. Most people grew up with a Twin bed, and the first time you upgrade to a Full, it feels like you have all the space in the world. But if you are buying a new bed because you are now sharing your mattress or plan to be, Fulls only offer 27″ of width per person (54″ wide total). Suddenly, when a Full means you barely have two feet of space to yourself, it doesn’t seem that big. Queen-size is typically the smallest size suggested for people sharing beds.
The other factor is how a desired size fits in your space. If you have a big city studio apartment, a King-size bed is going to take up much more room than you can afford to lose. Another scenario is if you have a more spacious residence, but it is filled with tight corners and hallways. If you can’t get a bed of a certain size into your room, it’s not going to do you any good.
Next time you’re looking for a bed, identifying the mattress size that’s right for you will be the smartest thing to figure out first, and will help all the other factors fall into place more easily.
