Deerfield Fair- New England’s Oldest Family Fair!
When summer ends and autumn breezes in, there is nothing better than spending the day at the fair! Our favorite fair- The Deerfield Fair, celebrated 138 years of fun! And, it keeps getting better every year!
My son, his friend, my hubby and I visited the Deerfield Fair Saturday the 27th. It was a perfect day for outdoor activities. For New Hampshire weather, it was unseasonably HOT- 85 degrees! Regardless, we have a great time doing everything from eating fair food, watching sheep dog trials, getting thrills on some rides, watching Granite State Frisbee Dogs and relaxing in the Relaxation Grove eating our lunch!
We have a Border Collie so we couldn’t miss the Sheep Dog Herding Dog Demonstration. David, the gentleman that does the demonstration has been doing it at the Deerfield Fair for over 25 years. He was amazing with the dogs, explained everything and entertained us with stories of his animals’ antics. We even learned that he uses female Border Collies because the males are too busy trying to mark their territory.
The Granite State Disc Dogs were so fun to watch, I didn’t want to miss any of it to take a picture! Dogs of all shapes and sizes did a “Frisbee routine” set to music of their choice. OK, so maybe it was the handler/owner’s choice. Some of this high energy, talented pups were completely focused on the frisbee. Some were completely distracted with all the new smells, people and goat/sheep or duck droppings. The show was very entertaining and a family favorite!
Another one of our favorite parts of the fair was the NH made products barn. They had many pet-friendly products, wellness, candy and more! One of our favorite NH made companies was Gunther’s Goodies- Dog treats made from spent grains. Brown Paw was another dog treat boutique that we visited! Our pups were very happy with their Doggy Goody bag!
Of course it isn’t a fair if you don’t visit the 4-H barn and see the fun projects the kids are doing. It’s amazing to see the things they come up with. They take such pride in their projects. We tried to talk the boys into doing 4-H at our school. Justin decided we were going to get Indian Runner Ducks and teach our Border Collie to herd them!
There were animals everywhere at the fair. We visited cows, pigs, poultry, Llamas and more! When we saw the sheep in their “white coats,” my hubby said they were running from the law and trying to be incognito. 🙂
Don’t forget the food! The first thing we did was get Cotton Candy and Fried Dough. I love Fried Dough- and it was even better this year because they had “nuggets” which are easier to share and eat! Huge Turkey Legs, Fried Pickles, Slushies, ice cream, French Fries and Fried Oreos are just a few of the choices at the Deerfield Fair. Can’t beat fresh cut French Fries!

We had a great day in the sun at the Deerfield Fair! We even got a little sun burnt! That’s pretty rare for September in New Hampshire!
Special thanks to David O’Neal- President of Deerfield Fair Association. He took time out of his busy day to talk to us and give us some great tips to enjoy the fair. I only have one regret- I never got to try the Fried Oreos and now I can’t get them out of my head!

The dates are already set for next year! We can’t wait!
