Sid Dickens’ handmade wall tiles (or “Memory Blocks”) have been popular collectibles for twenty years and I am finally getting my hands on one! To be honest, this review was very difficult for me. Why? There were so many beautiful tiles to choose from, it took me days to decide on the perfect one. (It’s not everyday I get a beautiful work of art to decorate my home with.)
I choose the owl because I love owls and all they symbolize. The tile is titled Wisdom- Your brilliance lights a path through the dark woods of the world. There have been many times in my life I have needed light to find my way.
You can say this review became very personal for me from the very beginning because choosing a place to start in your Sid Dickens’ collection is a personal process. Memory blocks can become a tradition and a piece of artwork that you can become involved in. You select the placement of the tile on your wall. It is a simple act on your part, but when you do this you are adding YOU into the artwork. If you think of it like this, you have just collaborated with the artist – he creates the tile, you place the memory where your heart leads. Together you have created something beautiful and a reflection of your heart.
I am amazed that Dickens can create such beautiful pieces that his collectors can connect to in a way other art doesn’t allow. The collector has the opportunity to pull pieces together that show their reflection instead of the artist’s reflection. I have no words to explain how beautiful that is.
Another thing I love about Sid Dickens’ tiles is that they make wonderful gifts to those you love. Start creating a wall with a family member, mother, daughter, Aunt, or even your best friend by purchasing one tile for them each year for their birthday, Christmas, or Anniversary. I promise the result of your efforts will be cherished greater than any other gift you can buy.
Stop by his online gallery to see all of his beautiful tiles and what he has available for purchase. One of my favorite online features is the ability to Create a Wall online. If you want to see how to create a wall and what they will look like after your collection is complete- this is a great place to start. Victoria was so intrigued by the process that she created her own wall and shared it with me for the review.
Victoria’s response to the Sid Dickens Create a Wall Online:
Creating the wall online was fun and sad at the same time. I created this beautiful collaboration of blocks that remind me of my husband and I together and our journey as a family. It really makes me want to start my own Sid Dickens’ collection one day. I imagine a wall in my home decorated with such sentimental pieces being my favorite place in the house. (That is a bold statement for me since the Kitchen is usually my favorite place to be!)
My memory block is heavier than expected. The blue color is subtle and reminds me of an antiqued whitewashed board. I feel like the Owl is looking through me – exploring and taking everything in. I guess that is where wisdom comes from: experiencing, observing, taking it all in, being quiet in the moment until you have the wisdom to move forward.
