SoftShell Ice Cream Ball #Review and #Win your own Ice Cream Ball- 25 winners

July 21, 2014 by Pam Maynard

review disclosure

Did you know that July 20th is National Ice Cream Day, and in order to celebrate YayLabs! SoftShell Ice Cream Ball is partnering with Organic Valley in a large Facebook giveaway to honor this timeless, delicious treat!  I was so excited to get this SoftShell Ice cream ball to review one of my favorite foods!  I’m not sure who was more excited, my son or me!  He has great taste and takes after me- he loves Ice Cream about as much as I do.  The only thing we differ on is the flavor.  He loves his filled with candy, chocolate, etc.  I love plain vanilla and berry flavored ice cream.  So, since he is my one and only son, we made a flavor he can up with: Butterscotch Chocolate Chip Ice Cream!

First off, we did read the instructions and gathered all the necessary ingredients.   One ingredient needed to freeze the ice cream was Rock Salt.  I had to ask for help to find that one.  Our local grocery store does carry it – look in the cat food aisle near the windshield washer fluid.

We bought half and half for our ice cream and the rest of the ingredients we had at home.  My son helped me with each step.  Especially adding the butterscotch and chocolate chips.  Everyone loves chocolate and butterscotch, so we made our own recipe!  Here is what we used:

  • 1 pint of Half and Half
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 3 big squirts of Butterscotch sundae topping
  • 1/4 cup of mini chocolate chips
  • 1/2 tbls vanilla extract

We mixed all the ingredients in a glass measuring cup so we could easily pour it into the ice cream ball.  We added ice and 1/2 cup of Rock Salt to the other end of the Ice Cream Ball.  Then the fun began!  For the first 10 minutes, we rolled the ball back and forth and took turn throwing it in the air.  Be sure NOT to kick the ball, bounce it or let your dogs play with it.  You can see in our video how we “roll.”

After the  first 10 minutes was up, we opened the ice cream side of the ball and scraped the sides down.  This part got a little messy and was hard to do.  Do not use anything that will scratch the inside of the ice cream ball.  We used a wooden spoon and then switched to a big plastic serving spoon so we could scrape better.  We put the top back on and timed it for 15 more minutes.  The more fat in your milk/cream product, the less time it takes to make the ice cream.  Twenty-Five minutes was perfect for our Half and Half concoction.

Here are some great pictures of our yummy Butterscotch Chocolate Chip Ice Cream!  Let me just say that all that rolling and throwing the ball around burns off all the calories you are about to consume with this yummy treat.  The next batch we make is going to be 100% kid-powered.  My son already has plans for which friend comes over first to make the next batch of ice cream.  He already knows their favorite kind of ice cream so we can make sure we have the right ingredients on hand.

I highly recommend this SoftShell Ice Cream Ball for any family that loves working together to make a cold, delicious treat!  Remember, you can use any kind of milk- even almond or rice milk to make your Ice Cream.  You will just have to roll and shake the Ice Cream Ball a little longer to get it to freeze.  What kind of ice cream would your family make first?
