A Guide to Being Frugal and Getting Back on Your Feet After Bankruptcy

July 11, 2014 by Pam Maynard

After filing for bankruptcy, it can be a challenge to live frugally while you regain your financial standing. Although living within your means and spending less can be difficult, there are a few ways to get back on your feet without heading back into debt. Between cutting coupons to shopping at second-hand stores, there are practical methods available to reducing what you spend while still purchasing what you need.  Being frugal can be easy if you know how!

Use Coupons

To live within your means and reduce the cost of groceries, it’s important to purchase the Sunday newspaper to find coupon inserts for common items. When manufacturer coupons are paired with store coupons, it can equate to hundreds of dollars in savings each month for everyday products that you may already be purchasing. Several websites and blogs are also available as guides to couponing each month for a convenient way of learning from the experts and hearing about the latest deals.

Shop Second-Hand

Second-hand clothing, furniture, and household products are often sold in good condition at discounted prices that are affordable to the general public. Skip the designer stores and opt for purchasing school clothes for the kids, movies, and even electronics at the consignment stores.

Cut the Cable

With the average price of cable on the rise by five percent, it doesn’t make sense to spend so much on entertainment. Cut the cord with your cable or satellite provider while opting for cheaper options that include subscribing to Hulu or Netflix. You’ll spend a fraction of the cost each month without having to part ways with your television.

Create a Budget

To ensure that you only spend what you can afford each month, it’s crucial to make a budget that will be the blueprint for what you can spend on fuel, rent, or fast food. According to Faber Inc., a company that provides services in bankruptcy in Edmonton, using a budget and sticking to cash for purchases can prevent overspending throughout the month.

For those who have experienced the discomfort of filing for bankruptcy, it can be discouraging to face the facts and look at your current financial situation. Although it may take time, there are practical ways to living frugally to regain your financial standing and increasing your stability. By having access to the right tools and practicing simple habits, it will work to rebuild your financial independence and redeem what was lost with bankruptcy.
