Four Keys for a Successful Family Road Trip

May 19, 2014 by Pam Maynard

Road trips with the family were always memorable in their own special ways with overheating engines, scenic detours, tiny motel rooms in even smaller towns and more. At the time, things were traumatic, but now these remembrances bring smiles to your face, and that’s why everybody likes a road trip. Here are four keys that will help you have a successful family road trip.

Four Keys for Your Family Road Trip

1. Join a Travel Club

There are many advantages of belonging to a reputable Travel Club, and you can join right before you leave. They provide maps online and some have Travel Apps available, which will turn a smartphone into a GPS, a tour guide, a locator of emergency services, tourist attractions, gas stations and more. National Travel Clubs give you a connection 24 hours a day.

2. Auto Maintenance

If you and your family are ready for an exciting road trip, it only makes sense to check that the vehicle is in good shape. Shops like Speedy Brake and Apollo Muffler in Calgary will be happy to tune up your car or RV before you leave town. If you have ever had a break down on a long trip, you know just how stressful auto problems can be when you are away from home. Nip the problem in the bud and get your vehicle checked out ahead of time.

3. Skip the Junk Food

Professional travelers suggest that you make stops every few hours to stretch and get a snack. Consider bringing a cooler pack with “real” food that was purchased at a regular grocery store. In a cooler, you pack meats, cheeses, fresh fruits with cold water and juices. Use ice packs, so you won’t find your food swimming at the end of the day.

4. Be Safe and Save Petrol

The most important thing in any road trip is to be safe. Your car works much harder at speeds of 75-85 mph, so you save money by driving at 60-65 mph. Don’t drive at any sustained speed for 15-16 hours because it wears on the vehicle and on the driver. Gas prices do fluctuate throughout the year, so if you can avoid driving on holidays, you will avoid holiday prices. Travel on the weekdays, and a tank of gas will cost less.

The goal is to have a great time and see the countryside, your favorite tourist destination or campsite. Leave the stress behind, and enjoy the drive!
