Six Tips To Get The Most Out Of Your Family Portraits This Year

March 27, 2014 by Pam Maynard

A family portrait is a great way to preserve those precious moments when your kids are growing up. It’s important to take them time to do your research and prepare for your photo sessions so that you can get the best possible portraits to frame in your home. Here are six tips to get the most out of your family portraits this year:

6 Tips To Get The Most Out Of Your Family Portraits This Year

Use A Professional

While it might be tempting to go with a friend who has a nice camera, choosing a professional photographer will give your photos an edge and clarity that you are looking for. Professionals know more about lighting, picture composition, and posing than your average amateur. They can also perform the photo editing that makes your pictures really shine.

Dress Up

While you don’t have to all where jeans and the same color t-shirt, dressing up will make your photo session feel more special. Pick clothes that flatter the wearer and show some personality. Instead of matching color, try matching color palettes, like all cool or warm colors. Accessories like hats, scarves, or suspenders can make for more fun and creative shots.

Go On Location

Studio photos are great, but some of the best photography happens in the great outdoors. Is there a park, field, or park of town that is special to your family? If so, talk to your photographer about it to get some fun and personal shots. Getting your pictures taken at somewhere outdoors will give your photos a more personal and unique touch than a standard background you will get in a photo studio.

Act Natural

People tend to tense up when taking pictures, which leads to a staged feeling and fake smiles. While your photographer might have you do some posing, work within the poses to show natural smiles and interactions. Have your photographer take pictures of your family talking and walking together to help everyone relax and get some candid shots. Remember to have fun with it.

Have A Plan

Some people want playful, candid shots, while others prefer a more serious or structured feel. Decide what is right for your family and communicate with your photographer about your hopes for the shoot. Be sure to research and talk with different photographers, as some will be much more candid than others, which might not be good for your family if you want serious or traditional poses.

Hair and Makeup

While you don’t need to get it professionally done, hair and makeup are a big part of getting great photos. Camera flashes can make people look washed out, so use a little more makeup than you usually would. This may feel uncomfortable at fist, but the end result will be great. Consider using long lasting hair products or those with extra hold, especially if you are shooting outside.

The most important thing is to have fun and let your family be themselves. If everyone is comfortable and having a good time, it will show in your family portraits. The best pictures are the ones that let all the relationships and personalities of your family shine.
