While you declutter your house, you surely stumble upon many unwanted items. Don’t be in a rush to throw them away, however, as you may be able to benefit from them. Ever needed money for things that you can live without but still want to have? Or are you willing to put aside some money for rainy days? Do your favorite spring shoes need repair?

This could be your chance to buy all that without spending a penny of your salary on it. Work out some extra cash by selling your unwanted stuff. What should you do? Read this article to get a general idea.

Clearing up your stuff

Start by clearing your items. Uncluttering the house regularly does not only provide space but it can also bring you money. So, roll up your sleeves and start cleaning. While you are wiping and dusting, make sure you remove all items that you don’t use or need anymore and then figure out which of them can be sold.

Preparation

First off, choose what things you are going to sell. Look them up on the Internet and check their value. This will determine how much you can claim for your item. If it is an old, used item, you should check websites like eBay, Craigslist and Amazon to see the average price the item is sold at. Pay special attention to how much other people are asking for the same item and compare prices. Also, take into consideration the condition of the product.

This said, now is the time to determine your price. You need to adjust to the supply and demand. If your item is hard to find and its cost is high, you can price it accordingly. If it is widely available both used and new, you need to provide a smaller price, not too small, however.

Don’t forget to consider shipment costs as well.

What items you should look out for in the house:

  • Furniture

  • Clothes (a bit difficult to sell but still…)

  • Lamps

  • Bicycles

  • Computers/other gadgets

  • Baby stuff

  • Books/CDs/DVDs

  • Musical instruments

  • Office furniture

  • Shoes

  • Tools

  • Antiques

  • Large appliances

Choose Your Method of Selling

Online

Internet is widely used today for a great deal of activities and is abundant with online shops where you can offer your items. One of the pros of online trade is that you can post a photo of the product so that others can see it. You can also add a description, measurements, etc. The more information you provide, the more people will know about it. For example, if you want to sell your shoes, you should definitely include their size.

Another advantage of online trading is that you can put your items for sale in various places and sell your stuff for the best price possible. Websites like eBay offer the chance for you to auction your item and make people bid for it.

Local shop window

Another way to advertise your products is to place an add on a shop window or a board. To attract as many people you have to make it look really appealing. It has to be visible. Add a description of the item, write its name and add “FOR SALE”. You can also include a small picture. Use bright colours. Place ONO (“or nearest offer”) on the ad. Now write down a price much higher than what you want for this item. Later when you are negotiating the price, you will hopefully reach your desired price.

Yard sales

If you live in a house, you may as well host a garage sale. This type of sale is typically held in the States, however, if your town allows it, you can host one in your yard too. Garage sales allow you to negotiate the price of the item you want to sell. Most of the time, however, it is determined by the culture. You should know that the most valued items at a yard sale are clothes, household items and goods; generally, anything portable. When you offer a good bargain price people will flock at your yard.
