School will soon be out and summer will be in full swing. As the kids head out for new and exciting adventures, make sure they don’t miss some good-old fashioned fun along the way. Listed below are seven things every child should learn to do this summer:
1. How to Build a Sand Castle
Consider the beach as a large open canvas. Help your kids learn how to use just the right amount of sand and water to make a castle that can reach as high as their imaginations can take them.
2. Spit Watermelon Seeds
There’s nothing so tasty on a hot summer day as an ice cold slice of watermelon. Teach your child the great art of how to take a huge delicious bite and then separate and spit out the seeds. Next, challenge them to see who can spit their seeds the longest and farthest. If this isn’t quite your style, stick with seedless watermelon.
3. Learn to Swim
Learning to swim is a very important skill that can give your child the confidence he needs to feel safe in and around the water. Kids can enjoy various water sports and even competitions once they acquire the ability to swim. Plus hey, swimming is just downright fun! Even if your child knows the basics of swimming, it’s a good idea to sign them up for lessons for safe swimming so they can learn proper techniques and improve their skills.
4. Chase Fireflies
With all of your home’s exterior lights off, encourage your kids search for fireflies right after sunset. If your kids want to capture them, have a ventilated jar handy. However, since the firefly population has significantly decreased due to insecticides and pollution, be sure to release the fireflies after the kiddos have enjoyed them awhile.
5. What It’s Like to Sleep Under the Stars
Summer is a great time to head to any one of the many state parks across the country. You and your kids will enjoy counting the stars and breathing the fresh night air.
6. Where Produce Comes From
Check with your local chamber of commerce for when and where the next farmer’s market will be held in your area. Your kids will not only get to see and sample colorful, fresh, homegrown produce, but will also have the opportunity to learn more about the growing and harvesting process. To take it one step further, help your kids start their very own backyard garden.
7. Fly a Kite
Pick a warm, windy day and find a big open field. Your kids will shriek with delight once they finally get the hang of flying their kite high in the sky.
Summer can be a fun and magical time for children. Take the time to help your kids accomplish this simple, uncomplicated list. By doing so, you will be making wonderful, fond memories that both you and they will enjoy for many years to come.
