5 Fantastic Ideas to Keep the Kids Occupied During School Holidays

February 25, 2014 by Pam Maynard

The school holidays can be an extremely trying time for parents. Although it’s nice to have more time to spend with the kids, they can get bored, restless, and cranky most days as they need to have things to do. To keep you both happy and occupied, you need to make plans for the school holidays so your kids aren’t just moping around the house. We have 5 fantastic ideas for you to try:

1. Take Them on a Trip Away

The school holidays are the perfect time to take your kids on a trip away, especially since they’ve started charging for taking your kids out of school during term time now. You could take them anywhere: on a city break, a countryside break, or even a holiday somewhere hot like spain. For a luxury break in the UK, try London hotels with venere.

2. Teach Them How to Bake

Kids love cooking and baking, especially sweet treats that they can enjoy afterwards. Allow them to get involved from the very start, from choosing the recipe to going through the instructions step by step. Try your hardest not to get too involved for this to be most beneficial to them! You’ll be amazed at what they can do when you allow them.

3. Get Them Into Crafts

Crafts of all kinds are perfect for the school holidays. The only limit to what you keep your kids occupied with is your imagination! Teach them how to knit, sew, make jewellery, make things out of card and paper, and more. You could even cover the floor with newspaper and let them paint with their hands and feet! They’ll have so much fun and you’ll love watching them play.

4. Plan Plenty of Outdoor Activities

Your kids will want to get some fresh air on the school holidays, so plan plenty of outdoor activities to keep them active and healthy. Plan a picnic, a nature walk, take a dog for a walk, go swimming if you have a lake with clean water nearby, go on a bike ride, make an assault course, go camping, have a treasure hunt – use your imagination! Not only will you keep the kids occupied, you’ll all have fun staying active.

5. Organize Play Dates

Kids hate not seeing their friends over the school holidays, so they’ll love it if you organise some play dates for them to have fun together. Plan days out and include their friends; you could take them out for a day at the beach, or shopping. You could even just invite a friend over to your house, cook them dinner, and get them plenty of DVDs and sweets. You never know – the other child’s parent might return the favour, taking yours off your hands for a day!

Children need to be constantly stimulated to stay occupied, so it’s important you do what you can to make sure they’re having fun. Follow our advice for a stress free, fun school holiday!
