As parents we have the unique opportunity to help our children learn and grow. Encouraging them to develop a hobby is a great way for them to build self esteem and provide plenty of entertainment. What sparks their creativity? What brings them joy? Here are six ideas for getting your child involved.
Music
Children are innately drawn to music. Start small and pique your child’s musical interest by gifting them a microphone, keyboard, tambourine, or small drum and see what develops. Encourage them to try different sounds and rhythms. Maybe even host a “concert” in your living room. If your little one is a budding musician, perhaps provide an opportunity to take a music lesson and see where it leads.
Sports
Getting involved with sports is an excellent hobby to keep kids active and give them the chance to build friendships with peers. They’ll learn the importance of teamwork and get their energy out. Check with your community organizations like the YMCA or parks and recreation to find out what activities are available.
Depending on the sport your child is interested in, you can really make a push to help them at home. If you have a large yard and your child is interested in soccer you can practice with them. Or play basketball in the driveway. Even those you are fortunate enough to have a pool. The experts from BullfrogSpas.com say practicing different swimming techniques at home can better prepare your child for lessons and practices.
Reading
Reading books can open a whole new world for your child. Provide ample opportunities to visit the library or enroll in a reading program with incentives for those who can read the most books. Challenge them to write their own story or make a story/picture book at home.
Art
Do you have a pint-size Picasso whose eyes light up at the mention of an art activity? Let them try everything from paint with water to origami to modeling clay and let their creativity flourish through a variety of mediums.
Cooking
Does your child enjoy helping in the kitchen? Provide opportunities to help with meals. For example, very young children can help add ingredients to a bowl, What better place for a child to explore his or her creativity than in the kitchen. Pore over recipe books with them and select dishes to try.
Photography
Give your little shutterbug a chance to use your camera, even if it’s just the one on your phone. This is a great way for them to explore their creativity and see the world through their eyes. Have photos printed through an online site and give them the chance to scrapbook or design a collage.
Spend some time with your children and look for ways to encourage their interests and talents. It’s never too early for them to have a hobby, and it’s an investment in who they will become. Your children will thank you later when they have a developed talent and an advanced way to express themselves.
