5 Reasons to Own a Home in Montreal

February 16, 2014 by Victoria

My husband and I are were on a recent quest to learn of the best day to move.  While on our search, I came across “moving day” for Montreal, Canada, and was instantly intrigued.  I cannot imagine over one hundred thousand people, in one city, moving on the same day!  Can you imagine?

Own your home in Montreal!

Back story, the French had a requirement that urban leases begin on May 1 and end on April 30. In 1974 “moving day” was moved from May 1st to July 1st in an effort to allow children to remain in their current school establishment until the end of the school year.    While neither of these dates are a rule in effect in current day, it has become more of a matter of tradition instead.

For me, this entire day sounds very stressful.  So much so, I think I would have to own my home in Montreal instead of renting -just to avoid the entire process.  From my research, renters need to begin looking for their new residence in early March, and book moving help as soon as the company allows reservations!

Five Reasons to Own a Home in Montreal:

1) You can sit back and enjoy Canada Day as it is intended!  Oh goodness, I bet you didn’t realize that “Moving Day” fell on Canada Day too! Yes, “moving day” is on the same day as Canada Day and people are missing out on the fun and activities because they have to move!

2) Moving Sales & Deals:  As a homeowner in Montreal you can enjoy the weeks leading up to moving day to take advantage of moving/yard sales.  If you aren’t stressing over packing and reducing your own furniture load, you can pickup a few goodies for your home instead.

3) Keep your Pets:  Moving day is the busiest time of the year for the humane society as many renters are leaving their animals behind because their new lease doesn’t permit them.  Thousands of pets are being abandoned… if you own your home, you get to keep your pet!

4) Tossing Coins Into the Air!  Owning a home means your money is going somewhere.  It is an investment!  If nothing else, if you grow wearing of the same domicile, you can always rent it out!

5) Earn some cash!  From what I can tell, moving help is of great need.  If you aren’t changing residences, you can offer your services to help someone else move.  Earn money during this time instead of spending it!

Moving to Montreal?  Do you plan on renting or purchasing your home?
