Friendly Neighborhood: Five Ways To Get Along With Difficult Neighbors

January 26, 2014 by Pam Maynard

Getting along with your neighbors can make all the difference between a great neighborhood and a terrible one, so it might be up to you to do the work to get along with that unpleasant person next door. Here are some tips on how you can deal with difficult neighbors:

Be Willing to Exchange Pleasantries

A simple wave and a “Hi, how’s it going?” can go a long way towards getting on someone’s good side. Your neighbors may seem unpleasant and unfriendly, but consistently greeting them cheerfully sends the signal that you’re always willing to reach out. Don’t take up their time with long winding chats about your children and pets, but greet them when you see them and make them feel liked.

5 Ways To Get Along With Difficult Neighbors

Don’t Cross Their Boundaries

While a wave from your yard is normal and noninvasive, cranky neighbors may be fiercely protective of their privacy and their boundaries. Respect their space and don’t let your kids cut through their backyard or let your dog play on their lawn. This lets them know that you respect their space and aren’t going to intrude on them, helping you avoid unpleasant altercations.

Put Up Fencing

You’d be surprised at how much putting up a fence can help to set up clear boundary lines. This way, neither person has to be bothered by what happens on the other side and gives everyone a sense of privacy. Putting a fence sets clear boundaries for everyone involved and can actually compliment your home, suggests professionals who specialize in Vinyl fencing in St. George.

Don’t Confront Them When You’re Angry

If your neighbors have done something that just makes you crazy, the worst thing to do is go over there right away to give them a piece of your mind. Take a deep breath and let yourself calm down. That way, when you talk to them later, you’ll be able to discuss it in a calm, reasonable manner without it spiraling into enraged insults. Acting unreasonable will give them more reason to believe you are the difficult neighbor, and they could be less willing to compromise with you.

Consider a Mediator

If you’ve tried everything and you and your neighbor are still not getting along, it may be time to get somebody else to step in and help you mediate your disputes. Other neighbors can be very successful in finding common ground and patching up arguments. If it’s a serious enough problem, it may be worth hiring someone to help you reach a compromise you can live with.

Difficult neighbors can make the area feel uncomfortable less friendly. Fortunately, with these tips and a little patience, you can turn that uncomfortable relationship into something both of you can live with. Take a deep breath and put some of these solutions into action.
