Your Children Are Everything: 6 Ways to Make Your Home a Safe Place

December 27, 2013 by Pam Maynard

As a new parent, you have to worry about your young children coming into harm from the outside world. However, you shouldn’t forget that there are many dangers inside your home as well. Child proofing your home is important. Below are six ways to make your home a safe place for children.

Cover Electrical Outlets

One serious danger to infants and young children is an uncovered electrical outlet. Purchase some plastic outlet covers. Stick them into all your outlets when not in use to avert much of the danger.

Store Chemicals Out of Reach

Before having children, you may have placed a lot of household cleaners, solvents and other materials containing poisonous chemicals in floor level cabinets. As a parent, you must correct this habit. Instead, make sure to only store dangerous materials in high shelves out of reach.

Implement Safety Gates

Stairs can definitely be a real danger for infants and toddlers. Put your mind at rest by installing safety gates at the top of all stairs. Even if it’s only a couple steps, your child could be seriously injured.

Cover Sharp Corners

One danger you may have not though of is your coffee tables and other low level furniture. Some of these pieces of furniture have very sharp corners. If a child were to run into one of those corners, it could result in a gouged eye. You can purchase soft plastic covers to place over these exposed corners to make them less dangerous.

Install a Home Monitoring System

Another fact of parenting is you can’t physically keep watch over your children during every moment. One way to help bridge the gap is by installing a home monitoring system. The Vivint home security cameras in such a system can allow you to check up on you children from your smart phone to make sure they aren’t in danger or being abused by others. Whether you’re in Arlington VA or Salem OR, you’ll always have access to your home or your family and have that peace of mind.

Cover Your Pool

Many children drowned in pools when out of their parents’ sight for only a few minutes. Help alleviate this danger by covering your pool when it is not in use.

Being a good parent requires a lot of pro-action. You have to see possible dangers before they ever have a chance to harm your child. It may take some work and critical thinking. However, it will put you much more at ease.
