While it may be winter now, spring will arrive before you know it. Now is the best time to stock your shed with all the supplies you’ll need for the coming planting season, for several reasons – everything is on sale since it’s unneeded right now, the weather means pests are less likely to pester you while cleaning out the shed, and most importantly, you don’t want to find yourself without a tool when you need it. Stock everything in the shed beforehand, and you’ll have everything you need to get started planting as soon as the snow melts.
Hand Tools
Keep your shed organized with shelving units and stands for large tools. Make sure you have a leaf rake to handle all the dead leaves that will need to be cleaned from your yard, and a garden rake to drag out any stubborn weeds. A shovel and a spade are great for digging holes of various sizes, and pick up and edger and hoe to prep the borders of your garden. Having a good, sturdy pair of loppers is important for thicker plants that need to be cut back.
Lawn Equipment
Place your lawn mower in a central location so it can easily be ridden out and backed into the shed, if you have a riding mower. A push mower gives a little bit more flexibility, since it isn’t so heavy and can be stored in more places. Ensure that your wheelbarrow is sturdy; plastic wheelbarrows tend to degrade over time and become fragile, so invest in a new one if your current wheelbarrow is no longer up to par. If you have a trailer that attaches to your mower, or a garden wagon to pull by hand, make sure space is set aside for that, as well. Having a pair of replacement wheels like the Rolltek International Trolley Wheels is a good idea, in case anything breaks mid way through a project.
Seeds and Plants
Having a few shelves dedicated to storing seeds helps to keep things organized. Many seeds can survive cold weather conditions that the plants themselves could not, so take a shelving unit and organize according to seed and plant type and season. This way you’ll be able to find everything you need quickly for spring, summer, or fall planting. However, make sure the seeds are in a location that rodents can’t get into – seeds are often tasty treats for critters.
With a small investment of time and effort, you can organize your shed the way you’ve always wanted it, with all the tools and supplies you need on hand long before it’s ever time to get your hands dirty.
