Five Ways to Freshen up Your Home

December 14, 2013 by Pam Maynard

An elaborate foyer will mean nothing to your guests if they enter your home and immediately wrinkle their nose! If you’re struggling with strange odors and unwanted smells, here are five ways to freshen up the place.

Spa still life with candles
1: Candles

The quick fix for a malodorous atmosphere, candles won’t eliminate the smell of wet dog, but they’ll release pleasant fragrances into the air while you grab Fido and force him into the backyard.

2: Herbs and Spices

Potpourri may or may not work on your sock drawer, but a few clove buds placed over a boiling pot of water will transform everyday vapors into supreme odor-busters. Cinnamon is another possibility, though be warned, you’ll probably crave pastries when you’re done.

3: Houseplants

Geraniums and gardenias will keep your home smelling like a natural garden as long as they’re in bloom. Lavender will soothe you to sleep. Jasmine will clear your sinuses and make a great cup of tea.

4: Odor Machines

These small, discreet machines can be tucked into a corner and left to purify the air, making them a great way to neutralize everything from litter boxes to cigarette smoke.

5: Baking Soda

You may already be using it to clean your drains and counter tops, but did you know that baking odor placed in the refrigerator can also eliminate foul smells? In addition, you can sprinkle it onto your carpet, let it sit for half an hour and then vacuum it up for a painless and inexpensive alternative to professional cleaning.
