The seasonal shift to autumn sees nature at its most glorious, with abundant colourful hues and golden shades. But there’s no reason why the inside of your home can’t reflect the outside, so bring nature indoors this autumn with these quickfire seasonal decorating tips.
Warm colours
Autumn colours are very much biased towards rich reds, burnt oranges, golden yellows and earthy browns, so give your home an autumn feel by adding these colours to each room. Consider hanging artwork on the walls depicting autumn shades, place colourful candles around the home, change cushion covers and curtains to bring the outside in.
Gather autumn finds
Autumn is a great time of year to go foraging outdoors to find things that can add an interesting touch to your home. Gather colourful twigs, pine cones, conkers, late blooming flowers and crisp leaves to create wonderful works of art that can be incorporated into a centrepiece or wall display. If you’re particularly creative, then why not make a seasonal wreath to hang on the front door to welcome guests in, bursting with twigs, cones and bright hedgerow berries?
Autumn harvest
This is the time of year when crops are plentiful and it’s time to gather in the harvest and use it to decorative effect. Apples and pears are bulging on trees and colourful squashes and pumpkins are ripe for the picking. Make the most of these seasonal edibles by creating a charming display in the home. Fill a fruit bowl with colourful hand-picked fruit. If you have any arty streak, then paint the bowl and mount your picture on the kitchen wall.
Display a range of squashes and pumpkins on a kitchen shelf so that they add an interesting decorative feature to your home. Or, create an interesting pumpkin display by the front door to welcome guests in to your home.
Add stencilling
Stencilling is a fun and easy way to add interest to a wall at home. It can brighten a room up without the need to do a complete repaint. As autumn gets under way, choose a leaf-inspired stencil to add to a wall. Or, for something a bit different add a stencil tree, where you can place small photographs from each branch.
Focus on your fireplace
When the temperature starts to plummet, you’ll be making more use of your fireplace to keep warm, so make sure that it looks its best this autumn. Aside from keeping it well kept and clean, use seasonal inspiration to decorate it. Place rustic coloured candles either side of it. Press maple leaves and hang them decoratively around a string of fairy lights. Gather long twigs and place in a vase to add instant appeal.
Kitchen colour
Add seasonal colour to your kitchen by displaying dried beans and pulses of reds, purples and oranges in repurposed Mason jars. Bring out your spice racks and display the colourful jars of warming spices and herbs. Paint empty tin cans in oranges and reds and fill with fresh herbs to brighten up your windowsills.
