How to Keep Kids Safe at Home Even From a Distance

September 17, 2013 by Pam Maynard

There are times when kids will need to be home alone for some period of time. This can cause stress in parents who worry about the safety of the child. It can even make the child nervous if something unusual happens. Now is the time to educate your kids and yourself on some simple safety tips. This will help parents to keep kids safe at home even from a distance.

How to Keep Kids Safe at Home Even From a Distance

Education

Education can keep a child safe while home alone. All children should understand that no one is allowed in the house. Teach them that the door should never be opened while parents are gone, even if they know who is at the door. Children should know exactly where to go for help if an emergency like a fire occurs. Kids should also memorize the work numbers for parents and addresses of places like hospitals and police stations.

Checking In

Children who are home alone should be taught to check in with a parent or other adult on a regular basis with a simple phone call. This shows the child is still safe and inside of the house. Neighbors or friends can check on the child if a call is missed.

Home Monitoring Systems

An effective way to keep kids safe, is to install a home monitoring system. A San Francisco home automation system will send reports when the child comes into the house, and if any entryway is opened without permission. It can also detect fires or smoke. A system from Vivint in Denver CO can also include cameras that broadcast what is happening in the home to a secure online server. This allows parents to visually check on kids in the house from any location.

Childproof the Home

Kids are curious about everything. Parents should keep anything that is potentially dangerous like prescription drugs, sharp power tools, or dangerous chemicals stored in a locked and inaccessible location. Additionally, dangerous areas like poolsor high windows should have protective gates or bars to protect kids from accidents.

Practice Safety Drills

Children learn in many different ways. It is important to practice safety drills every few weeks to make sure kids know what to do and who to contact. This should include walks to the home of the neighbor, using the phone, and even walking to a police station to ask for help. Safety drills will reinforce what the child knows, and make acting in an emergency less stressful.

Aside from home monitoring, education is the best way to keep kids safe from a distance. Preparing kids for any situation like a fire, or stranger knocking on the door, will allow them to act instantly in a smart and safe manner. This education will help protect kids well into adulthood.
