Your Home Makeover – 5 Steps To A Different Look

September 14, 2013 by Pam Maynard

Giving your home a makeover is the perfect way to liven up each room. As an added bonus, research has determined that exposing yourself to new colors and items in your home can have an impact on your creativity and happiness. Therefore, it is always a good idea to make changes with the seasons, and it will also provide more visual impact for your guests. Although there are no specific rules that you need to adhere to, different seasons resonate well with certain colors and themes.

1. Update Your Paint

Whether you want to repaint every room or simply add a few new accent walls, there is nothing that can change the mood of a room more than lightening your colors or adding a darker accent color. For example, light green, light to medium blue, light yellow, soft pink and even a light gray are all colors that will make your home feel more open and bright. These colors are best used in a kitchen. For your dining room you can go with bold colors like forest or emerald green, navy blue or red and you can use them as primary, accent or trim colors. It’s usually best to go with neutrals in the living room because you can add splashes of color with your furniture and curtains.

2. Create an Open Space

If your living room is typically filled with heavy wooden furniture, it is a good idea to lighten the space during your makeover. The living room is usually the place where you are more likely to entertain guests, and this will make it important to have a wide open flow. The website of a popular furniture store, sofasandsectionals.com has this comment to offer about the size of your furniture, “One of the most fundamental aspects to consider when designing a room is the scale of the furniture that will best suit it.” You can temporarily move some of your nonessential wooden items into a different room and place an emphasis on providing an open area that will let the breeze move easily through your living room.

3. Place Fresh Flowers in Each Room

If you want to change the mood of a room quickly add some fresh white flowers or a bright beautiful bouquet of flowers in various colors. It is definitely a good idea to pick up an inexpensive bouquet and split it up between several small vases. If you prefer not to use white, you should be able to find several other light options such as yellow or pink to brighten up your home.

4. Decorative Towels

The towels that hang in your bathroom have a big impact on the mood of the room. Therefore, unless you have a color scheme in place that will prohibit you from incorporating new colors, you should consider buying new towels that have a seasonal vibe. For example, you can get several complementary towels in a light to medium blue hue. Avoid getting a stack of towels that is all the exact same color because this will not bring as much life to the room.

5. Lighten Up Your Curtains

A lot of people use dark curtains during the winter, but it is a good idea to go with a white, off-white or pastel colors during the spring and summer months. This will brighten up each room, and it will also make the rooms in your home appear bigger.

As you can see, there are several relatively quick and inexpensive things that you can do to change the mood of your home. Keep in mind that you can store items like curtains and towels during their off seasons so that you can put them out during the appropriate season every year.
