Your Teen and Social Challenges: How Stronger Bonds With You Can Help

July 16, 2013 by Pam Maynard

Your Teen and Social Challenges How Stronger Bonds With You Can Help (2)

Parents today face unique challenges when it comes to raising their teens. The structure of today’s society has been forever affected by the many different social upheavals, such as those created by technology. While gadgetry has made life more convenient on the one hand, it is has also created a more tricky social world for teens, parents and everyone else to navigate. Below are some ideas on how to create a more special upbringing for teens and create many wonderful ways to bond with them.
Model Good Character

Demonstrating the best behavior possible is essential for teens. All children learn what they live, so providing a template for the most respectful behavior is paramount for parental success. Begin by being clear about the existing value system. Set guidelines, but encourage communication so that teens understand the foundation for the rules. Getting teens to cooperate with family responsibilities begins with caring, and there is no better way to show this than by example.

Promote Self Esteem

The teen years bring much confusion for many girls in particular, as they learn more about their feelings and response patterns. Today, the process is much more complicated given the barrage of media and technology that teens consume continually. However, parents are still required to teach teens how to develop self-esteem in healthy ways.

One way to do this is with the gift of diamond promise rings. Fathers give these rings to daughters to symbolize their own self-worth. They are also meant to remind them that their hearts and bodies are precious, something to be safeguarded until marriage. This is one of the best ways for young women to learn to value themselves very early in life. The ring does not have to be expensive, only symbolize what is important. With the special styles and variety that promise rings come in, the gifting of this ring from father to daughter will surely become a special memory.

Encourage Communication

Find ways to teach about life using situations that spark family discussions on the most important issues. Teen years can be made much more pleasant when effective character education occurs within the context of everyday family life. As parents and teens interact with one another and those outside the home, teens learn how to relate to many different types of people. Doing this also strengthens the relationship between parents and teens.

Celebrate Prom and Graduation

Graduations and prom are important activities that most teens look forward to. They are also a great opportunity to bond with teens by choosing outfits and arranging for special activities. Some of the best after prom parties are the ones that parents host in their own homes. Therefore, consider organizing an event at home or elsewhere if more room is needed. Choose a live band for a more worthwhile experience. Make the event as special as possible with delicious appetizers and soda on tap. Consider catering the party and having it professionally decorated with contests and giveaways.

Instigate Activities and Outings

Have as many family meals together as possible without extraneous devices or television. This simple thing can mean a lot for family bonding, particularly with teens. Encourage communication during the meal, listening to what they have to say and responding with interest. Go to local theater, art museums, fairs and other events as frequently as possible. The more time you spend with your teen, the less likely they may feel alienated or out of sorts.

Above all, the best way to help your teen is to help them stay engaged through their teen years. By helping them to focus and supporting all the above tactics, not only will you help contribute to a more productive teen life, but you can create many great memories during one of the most important periods in their lives for years to come.

Lisa Coleman shares some ideas on how to help a parent with a teen to stay focused through the teen years while helping to bond with them as well. With so many ideas, from the gifting of diamond promise rings, to throwing a party for graduation, are just a few terrific ways on how to help them feel loved and special through their teenage years.
