Spring Cleaning Tips on a Budget

April 17, 2013 by Pam Maynard

spring

Now that the weather is starting to warm up again, it’s time to start thinking about spring cleaning your home. Many people try to avoid this subject because they are under the impression that it is going to cost a lot of money to make their home look nice again.

Here are some spring cleaning steps you can take that won’t break the bank:

Clean up your yard

This is usually not something that takes a lot of money to do. As long as you have a rake, you can pick up leaves. Get ready for spring flowers that are going to be blooming in a couple of weeks.

Get out a broom and clean up your porch

You will also want to get out of your chairs and clean them off. This way, you will have a place where you can sit and relax after the hard work has been done.

Take a good look around the inside of your home

You may want to start with the living room. Dust and vacuum everything from the floor all the way down to the ceiling. Get those cobwebs in the corner and on the ceiling fan. Make sure that you vacuum underneath the couch as well as the coffee table. You will be surprised at the filth you will find. Take down and clean your blinds and curtains. Be careful to use the appropriate cleaning products as different surfaces need to be cleaned in different ways.

Now, look at the windows

Most people are very excited when it comes to cleaning windows. However, it is something that needs to be done. Get yourself some newspaper and some window cleaner and get it done both inside and out. If you use newspaper to clean your windows, you will be less likely to have streaks.

Next Steps

Now that the dusting and vacuuming has been done, you may want to think about washing walls. Once again, this is going to be a big headache. However, it is something that will go quickly and your living room will look amazing. Make sure to remove any nails that may be lingering. Don’t just leave the nail hole empty. Get some putty and put inside the hole. Depending on the color of your wall, you may need some touch up paint. Now that the living room is finished, you can move on to other rooms of your home. Keep in mind that de-cluttering is one of the most important things that you can do when it comes to your spring cleaning. Get rid of any old clothes that no longer fit. Encourage your children to clean out their toy boxes. Once you have put everything together, donate it all to Goodwill if it is usable again. If you do a little more deep cleaning throughout the rest of the year, when it comes time to do your spring cleaning, it won’t be so much work. If you can get the entire family together to work hard, it won’t take long and everyone will have a sense of accomplishment afterwards. You may even consider celebrating with a favorite family dinner. Now that your home has been cleaned, you may want to think about doing a little redecorating. When you replace the rugs in your bathroom or the curtains on your windows, always save them. This way, when you are searching for something a little different, you can get out the old items. This is an affordable way to give a new look to your home.

With a little creativity your home can look amazing on a budget. Now that you have a little more information, it’s time to get your family together and get to work.
