5 Ways to Keep the Kids Entertained in the Car

February 2, 2013 by Pam Maynard

Everyone loves to travel, but we all know that traveling with small children is not the easiest thing in the world. With proper planning, there are plenty of ways to entertain even the most energetic children while taking a trip in the car. Below are five great tips for entertaining your children in the car so that you can concentrate on driving safely and staying sane throughout the entire road trip.

Happy family in car on vacation

Car Games and Activities

All children love playing games and having activities to keep them busy while on a long road trip. Some great ideas for activities are coloring books, playing car bingo, I-Spy game and the first to see game. The alphabet game of trying to find something on the road that starts with each letter in the alphabet is always a fun challenge for the entire family. Playing card games in the car is also a good for children to pass the time by.

Laptops and DVD players

If you have older children, have them find a map on their laptop to follow along the way during your trip. Let them tell you what the next town or city is you are coming up to and how long it will take you to get there. Playing games on the laptop is fun for children as well. Portable DVD players are great to bring along for children of all ages. Watching a few movies can make a car trip seem like it has gone by in no time at all. When the kids get tired of movies and the laptop, how about a MP3 player or their iPod player for some easy entertainment?

Bring Along Some Books

If your children are old enough to read, bringing along some of their favorite books and magazines. This is a great way to keep them entertained for a while. This does not work for all children who might have a weaker stomach when traveling. If this is the case with your children, bring along some audio books and headphones for the kids to listen to books instead of reading.

Crossword Puzzles and Word Searches

Children love doing crossword puzzles and word searches. Buy some books that are applicable to their ages and have them work a few crossword puzzles along the way. This is something parents can help with as well. Not only are you busying the children up while traveling, you are building their vocabulary with crossword puzzles.

Bring Some Favorite Toys

All kids love toys, and bringing along some of their favorite ones on a trip can keep them entertained for hours. Make sure you bring toys that are different and ones the kids can use to play with for longer periods of time. Think of things like building blocks, Erector sets, Lego’s or maybe an easy model car for building. Kids can make some arts and crafts while traveling to take up some time. Bring along some toys that will entertain the kids, and you will be surprised at how much time goes by before they become bored.

Traveling with children is much easier when you take the time to plan ahead. Pack plenty of snacks for the children as well so that when they get hungry, you do not have to stop so often which will help you arrive at your destination sooner.

Jeremy is a father of three children who enjoys going on ling road trips. He says that it is important to keep the kids entertained because they can easily get bored on a long drive. Before setting out on your road trip, Jeremy recommends getting a tyre check at Jax Tyres to ensure maximum safety for your trip.
