5 Things You Can Do to Prevent the Common Cold

January 29, 2013 by Pam Maynard

COLD

Cold season is here and once it hits, hacking coughs, sneezing, runny noses, and headaches linger for weeks. Everyone is looking for a magic cure. While there is no pill that will instantly take away a nasty cold, there are five simple steps everyone can take to stave off a cold in the first place.

Load Up on Vitamin C

Vitamin C will definitely give the immune system a boost. It can be found in many natural sources, such as citrus fruits, spinach, and broccoli. Another good rule of thumb is to take supplements. Rosehips are power-packed with the essential vitamin. Consumers can also find plenty of vitamin C products, from lozenges to tablets, ensuring they get a substantial, daily dose.

Wash Hands Often!

Cleanliness is essential in beating the barrage of germs that affect us every day. Hands need to be thoroughly washed with soap often throughout the day. This is especially important before any meals. If there has been contact with anyone with a cold, head to the sink and wash up again. When it comes to public bathrooms, consider carrying tissue in a pocket to handle door knobs for an added measure of protection. Avoid touching the eyes, nose, and mouth because this is where germs will often be transferred to the body, leading to a full-blown cold or illness.

Get Plenty of Rest

A proper amount of sleep is vital for our well-being. Each night spent in at least eight hours of solid sleep has restorative powers. The body has a chance to refresh and recover from damages brought on by daily living. If it’s possible, take a nap when tired. Don’t fight going to bed early when the body says enough is enough. This is one of the hardest things for many people to accomplish as they lead busy lives. It’s time to make the self a priority, stick to a schedule, take measures to create a relaxing atmosphere, and get to bed.

Exercise, Fresh Air, and Sunlight

Stay active, even when the weather is colder and less favorable. The immune system will receive a vital boost with each moment spent in the fresh air. The lungs will continue to be strong and the rest of the body will benefit as well. Taking in daily doses of sunlight will benefit the bones. Being on the move can help to keep a body functioning at optimal capacity, better able to fight off illness.

Eat Well and Stay Hydrated

Eat plenty of fresh produce. Healthy foods will benefit the body in many ways, loading up on antioxidants and vitamins that are essential to avoid a nasty cold. Remaining hydrated is important as well. The body is better able to detoxify and keep everything running efficiently. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day, include at least five servings of fruits and vegetables, and feel better. With overall well-being, a person is less likely to become ill.

Dr Dennis Patterson is a GP from Sydney, Australia. He says that the common cold can often be avoided and following these five tips is a great way to start. If you are looking for a GP job in Australia, Dennis recommends contacting Health Staff Recruitment for assistance.
