Are you a DIVA Mom?
Guest post by Dennie B
Some people have the misconception that moms cannot also be divas. Well, I am living proof that we can handle being both. Now, I am not an out of control diva who insists on having everything my way, but I love fashion; I enjoy looking my best; and I am obsessed with shoes. So, many of my friends refer to me as “Diva.” For the most part, I think they are joking, or at least referring to me as “Diva” in a complimentary manner!
I have been married for 14 years and have two daughters aged 8 and 11. I have a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in English. With those degrees, I have been involved in the education field for 17 years. For 14 of those years I taught English in grades 8-12. For the past 3 years, I have been teaching elementary reading, library science, and computer technology skills. In addition to that, my youngest daughter takes guitar lessons and is learning to play the harmonica and recorder. My oldest daughter takes flute lessons. Athletically, both girls are part of a swim team year round. My youngest plays fall soccer, winter basketball, and spring soccer, all in addition to the other items mentioned above. WHEW! Yes, it seems like a lot, and it IS a lot.
Do I have many balls floating in the air? Yes, but that does not stop me from dressing fashionably, from always having my hair looking its best, or from having my make-up flawlessly done. NOPE! I enjoy all aspects of my life, but I enjoy them fashionably, always.
Because I am a shoe enthusiast, I always begin my outfits from the bottom up. My friends are always asking, “How in the world did you match those shoes perfectly to that dress?” Well, that’s simple. I buy unique-looking shoes FIRST. Then, either I am just lucky or have great fashion sense. For example, I love color-blocking, which has become a popular trend. I found a pair of color-blocked heels in the Avon catalog for $29.99. They are navy blue, red, and turquoise. I hesitated buying them, because at the time, I had absolutely NOTHING in my closet to match them. One day while surfing Kohl’s internet site with my daughters, I spotted a dress that looked as though it had been made for my shoes. I had to have it. When I wore the shoes and dress to work the next day, my co-workers were astonished.
Not everyone believes in starting from the bottom up, but I do. I collect shoes and adore them. I especially love designs that no one else has, so I look for the most unusual shoes I can find. Sometimes it takes me a while to find a match, and sometimes I merely happen upon an instant match. Call it pure luck or pure genius—either way, I love it. The right pair of shoes can make any outfit great. I truly do believe that. Some people ask me how I do it; wearing such high heels and surviving an entire day. I am not going to lie; there are times when I sacrifice comfort for fashion. Honestly, though, many of my heels are comfortable, maybe because I am used to them. But, I do have some that have my toes crying when I reach home.
So, if you ever see a pair of shoes that you just love and have to have, BUY THEM! You can purchase the outfit later, or piece it together at different times. I strongly believe in the notion that if you love it, buy it! Of course, the item has to fit your budget, but if you can afford it, do! Check out my ensemble.
