At-Home Solutions to Clear Clogged Drains
Clogged drains are the most annoying things that can happen to anyone because not only are they difficult to clear but they are also unhygienic. Clogged drains happen for a variety of reasons, chief of them being putting plates in the sink without clearing the debris of food off them, residual soap bits and hair.
Before you read about the ways to clear the clog, you should find out whether it is a full-on clog or a partial one. Full on clog means that nothing can pass down the drain but partial clog lets some water trickle down. Here is what you can do –
- Use A Plunger – For fully clogged drains, toilet plungers are best alternative, although they could be a little messy. So, after you have put on something, you wouldn’t mind getting dirty, so get working by filling the sink with water till half level. The trick to using the plunger is not to waste your energy by letting in air, make sure that there is water inside it so that is the only thing you are plunging through. When you cover the drain completely with your plunger and start pumping it up and down, you would see that some water starts to flow into it. This is the time when you fill more water and continue till all the water is easily flowing in and out.
- Use Hot Water – This might sound simple but it is a bit trickier than that. Basically, if you pour hot water directly, it would turn to lukewarm because of the cold water already existing in the drain. So, you could boil some on the stove in the biggest pot you have and add some salt to it, to help remove the flux.
- Use Soda or Pepsi – Everyone knows that soda works great for removing tooth enamel but what people don’t know is that soda or Pepsi has such a high acid content that it works wonders on clogged drains too. It has phosphoric acid that would loosen and even dissolve most of the junk that’s clogging your drain. Just let it fizz and pop in the clogged drain for a while and let it work its magic.
- Use Baking Soda With Other Useful Things – There is no clog that the following combinations of baking soda cannot remove –
- Baking Soda and Vinegar – Vinegar and Baking Soda are the best combination when you want to make a volcano but did you know that they work against clogs as well? One part of baking soda along with one part of vinegar (white) can be put in the drain to soak in overnight. Flush it in the morning which hot water and see the wonders.
- Baking Soda and Salt – Take for parts of boiling hot water and mix one part of baking soda and one part of salt with it. Leave this solution in your drain and let your clog soak in it, and then finally drain it in the morning.
