DAY 1
Describe your earliest memory of writing. How did your writing habit/process/career develop?
My earliest memory of writing goes back to middle school- around sixth grade. I started keeping a journal of my feelings, accomplishments, disasters and crushes. I did until my mom found it and read it daily. Back then, I had no idea she was reading it. It wasn’t until years later did I figure out that she had been reading it. Of course, now that I am a mom, I can see why she did. Luckily, I only have a son, so he most likely won’t write a journal as detailed as mine.
All through school, I loved to write and took pride in my fiction stories. I even wrote a few poems. My mom loved one so much she had it framed. Throughout my rebellious teenage years, writing was my only outlet. It was a way for me to release those feelings of happiness, sadness, joy or rejection. I only wrote for myself.
After my life evened out, I wrote less, worked more and studied hard. I was a perpetual student. I finally got my Master’s Degree in Business Communication in 2009. I did more writing for those classes then my whole k through BA degree! But something inside me wanted a more creative class. I started to look for classes to take, either writing or drawing. I found the Institute for Children’s Literature aptitude test, took that and mailed it in. My first class was on writing for children’s magazines. My husband makes fun of me because he says I make more money with my $300 degree than I do with my Masters. (I work in Healthcare as an MRI tech- I do not utilize my Masters directly in my job) I got a few articles published in small children’s magazines. Then I was lucky to get a feature story in GRIT magazine about Poultry on Pest Patrol. After that paycheck, my husband started building me a writer’s cabin so I would have a space to create my masterpieces.
Well, fast forward a few years. I have completed 2 ICL courses and am working on a 3rd right now. But I have also discovered the world of blogging. I have a blog – (obviously) Mom Does Reviews- that takes up all of my time. I do product reviews, giveaways, post deals, coupons, articles and more- anything that a mom would need to know or want to use. I don’t write for me anymore- I write for my blog and my readers. I have wanted to get back to writing for me and for publication again, that’s why I signed up for the Author Blog Challenge.
Wish me luck!
