The Review by Mom Does Reviews:
The Squirt is the cutest eco-friendlyalarm clock I have ever seen! Well, it’s the only one, but it’s still awesome. It is the ultimate reduce, reuse, recycle alarm clock. No batteries needed. It runs on water! A small microchip keeps remembers time so when you replace the water (in 6 months) you won’t need to reset it. It was very easy to set. You can even choose 12 or 24 hour time format. Don’t forget it’s an alarm clock too. My son loves it and wants it for his room. Right now, I am using it in case the power goes out and my alarm doesn’t go off for work in the morning.
It comes in 5 cheerful colors from blue to orange, purple, green and charcoal. This would make a perfect gift for that graduate or for father’s day or just for fun. It is quite the conversation piece. In fact, we had to do some research so we knew how it works. My son is going to take it to his 3rd grade class and explain it to them.
OK, my son and I were stumped by the water clock. What makes it work? Here is what we found:
“The secret to the clock not needing a battery is this: the water clock is a battery. That’s right chemistry fans, inside the clock is an electrolytic cell – or at least most of one. Peering inside, the keen observer will notice two metal posts, one copper and one zinc. These are well known metals for do-it-yourself batteries, and actually give a pretty respectable amount of electricity. An electrolytic cell needs 3 basic things to work:
- Two dissimilar metals (the copper and zinc posts);
- A electric load connected by cable to complete the circuit (the clock circuitry); and
- An electrolyte.
An electrolyte is simply a liquid in which the metals are suspended which conducts electricity. This allows ions that are produced in the electrolytic cell to move freely, letting the magic of chemistry occur. So adding the water completes the electrolytic cell, allowing current to flow and power the clock.
The metal included in the clock is substantial enough to last you until free energy is invented, and by not requiring new batteries every 6 months which had to be produced, shipped, and will likely not be disposed of properly, it is definitely a more environmentally friendly option.”
