Summer Camp: Why It Can Be the Best Thing for You and Your Child
Summer isn’t really that far off and that means turning your attention to those dreaded tests and school projects that need to be finished. The end of school heralds the start of 3 months of juggling all of your usual activities and chores with the added task of entertaining the kids. Whilst the kids might be counting down the days until summer break starts, you might be pulling your hair out wondering what you are going to do with them for 90 or so days!
According to a study carried out by the National Summer Learning Association, many students lose around 2 months of grade level equivalency in mathematics knowledge during the summer vacation. Students can also lose up to 25% of their reading proficiency during summer break, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
3 months is a long break and the loss of these skills can really put pressure on teachers once school starts once more. Many teachers have reported spending at least 4 weeks re-teaching topics and subjects that students have ‘forgotten’. So, what’s the answer to this knowledge loss and how can we keep our children learning whilst still having fun?
A Great Confidence Booster
There are plenty of summer camp programs on offer that will keep the kids active, entertained and engaged in the learning process throughout the summer months. Camp holds so many special memories for adults who spent their summers there and it’s a place where kids can thrive, experience a little adventure, and make new friends. They can choose from a wide range of activities including cooking, sports, crafts and lots of other outdoor activities. It’s a great learning environment and kids will pick up some wonderful leadership, teamwork and confidence skills.
Summer camp also gives children an opportunity to try activities they might not usually have access to or that they wouldn’t usually want to try. In a group environment, it’s amazing how much children can grow in confidence and you shouldn’t be surprised if your child comes back full of enthusiasm and zest!
While summer camp ensures that children continue to keep up with their academic pursuits, fun is always high on the agenda. Math skills will be kept sharp and kids will have access to books, games, media and many other educational formats that will keep them learning without them realizing it!
Summer camp is the answer to many parents’ prayers and has become an institution in the USA over the years. You can check out your nearest summer camp online and find out more about the types of activities on offer that will keep your child up to speed at school whilst having lots of fun.
