Earth Day Activities for Kids
This post was inspired by the experts at Kiddie Academy who have been a leader in educational childcare for over 30 years.
Do you and your children have an Earth Day Tradition? Does your family plant a tree every year or start a garden or just pick up trash in your neighborhood? I think Earth Day deserves it’s own traditions, just like Christmas. After all, without honoring the Earth and taking care of her, we wouldn’t be here!
Here are a few suggestions for a fun Earth Day Traditions:
Make a craft out of recycled materials:
My son’s class at school was challenged to make a Playground out of recycled materials, paint, glue and their imagination. They had egg cartons, bottle caps, toilet paper tubes, paper plates and more. He came up with a Space Playground:
Make an Tin Can Herb Garden:
Spring is a great time to start thinking about your garden. Kid’s want to have their own garden too. I found one of the best ways to get them interested in gardening, is to let them plant something, watch it grow and then actually eat what they planted. Find some tin cans, decorate the outside and plant some herbs that you normally would cook with. Be sure to label the cans with the type of herbs you are growing. You can use a Popsicle stick or write it on your decorative can. Kids will be proud of what they have grown, especially when you make spaghetti sauce and use their oregano herbs to make it!
Think of things you can do everyday to honor the Earth:
- Simple things like bringing your own reusable water bottle to work or school instead of buying bottled water can save thousands in plastic bottle waste. Bring your own coffee cup to work, don’t use a Styrofoam cup every time you get a new cup of coffee. Speaking of coffee, if you buy a cup of coffee, bring your coffee sleeve with you. You can even make your own, personalized coffee sleeve.
- Remember to bring your reusable shopping bags with you.
- Take a walk along the roads close to your house. Bring a few garbage bags and pick up cans, bottles and trash along the road. Be sure to recycle what you find.
